Are Video Ads the next best thing in Online advertising?

I have been reading a lot about how online video ads are getting better ROI compared to TV commercial. A few days back one article in The Wall Street Journal caught my interest where quite a lot was said about the phenomenon of online video ads and how companies like Jivox are providing free platform to small and medium sized business to come up with video ads.
This is very inspiring that start ups and smaller companies can cash on this ongoing boom without having to stretch their budget.
However, do you think that online video ads will be able to replace TV commercial as the mainstay of advertising?

When I see a company like that using a camtasia player with a loading screen that takes a long time to load on their "how it works" page it makes me chucle because on such an important page on their site they display how little they know about direct response video publishing because of the poor "technology" they use on their own site.

There is no reason for any company online today to have any loading time more than 3 seconds when streaming progressive video to a broadband user.

Absolutely, I cannot agree with you more. That said, I do think people are flocking to online videos/ads more than any online text ads. So, there is definite edge of video ads over text ads...and that of course when we assume that we have overcame the technical barriers. Cheers!

If that were the case then you would see links to video ads in search engine results for PPC.

Video has not replaced text ads in popularity and efficiency...

The goal of an ad is to get a click. Nothing beats a couple lines of text and a hyperlink in efficiency of getting the click.

The reason is because a video ad would have to be loaded and you cannot load a bunch of videos on one page without causing problems...

Therefore if google were to say default to video ads in search results instead of the traditional text ads or if sites were to do this with adsense blocks... then the process would have to be to click to load the ad and watch it and then click to visit the advertiser.

Video ads are not now and never will be more popular than text based or banner type advertising online.

However, video itself is gaining more popularity online and thus so is advertising in video online...

But you cannot really pit video based advertising vs text based advertising because one is not replacing the other.

Where am I saying that Video Advertising is going to replace the text ads. They can certainly coexist much like the traditional and online publishing do. However, visuals impact more on the readers/visitors than texts, and which is why images are used profusely while texts are kept minimal. A 30 sec cool video will attract more viewers than any banner ads. We are skeptical as we should be, but the day Google gets into this fray who knows...hah.

No wonder videos are next generation engagement tool. If places like You Tube can attract thousands views where most the videos are user generated, then there is no reason why videos made by professional do not attract the same, if not more....

Text and banner ads do far more volume than video.

Many video sharing companies are still struggling to get the hang of monetizing their content and pleasing their advertisers.

Now if you are just talking about independent video publishers and their ability to syndicate their own video and get eyeballs... that's another story.

It has its place I suppose. Use video to sell segways, don't use it to sell Dean Koontz's latest novel, right?

For me, for most stuff, it wastes my time with images and noise I don't want.

                    Hi,
I run a small business and am reasonably web savvy. Am working on SEO for my site. Currently, I only wish to reach my local customer base. Any thoughts on what really works online and within my budget?
                    Cheers,

Videos are good but think of all the millions of people with no speakers.

Unless the video is all text of course.

Video satisfies the need of deeper engagement and allows for an experience which has a higher recall rate and a much higher probability of generating user action. This explains why most of the websites today feature rich media like videos, small and highly targeted video ads.

      Cheers
