Ken Leatherman Needs Prayers and Thoughts

I talked to Ken this morning and he told me his little 4 year old granddaughter was killed last night in a tragic accident. She was in the bedroom with her mother when a television set accidentally fell on her and fractured her skull. Ken was with his granddaughter when she died.

He is absolutely heartbroken and he needs everyone's thoughts and prayers. He babysat her all the time and it seems like every time I talked to him, she was with him. Needless to say, his family is totally devastated.

I have known Ken for many years and he is one of the most honest, kind, considerate and caring people I have ever had the pleasure to know. We need to gather around him as a member of the WF family and let him know that we are all here for him.

I would also ask that everyone who is on his article a day list be patient while he gets through this tragedy.

Take care!

EDIT:

Ken gave me permission to post this and he asks that I remind everyone to be aware of what your kids are doing and to make sure you see that your television sets are secure so that something like this will not happen to anyone here.

Very sorry to hear this news.

(Sadly, a similar accident with a falling TV was in the news here recently, killing another toddler).

Best wishes to Ken and to the rest of the family.

        Hi Chris,

That's so tragic, it's hard to accept that such a thing could happen.

he is one of the most honest, kind, considerate and caring people I have ever had the pleasure to know
I wholeheartedly agree. Ken, who has a little image of an 'old geezer' patting a little dog on the head in all of his posts. It must be so hard for the parents and the rest of the family to deal with what has happened too.

Ken, my thoughts are with you and your family at this time. Wishing you great strength.

Strength and Courage to you Ken. Take care of your Daughter and Son. Their guilt will be overwhelming.

I never got to know Ken since I haven't been at this forum long. But what I do know is that I have a little daughter, who just turned 4 years old. She is the most precious thing in the world to me.

I never realized I could love something so much until my daughter came into my life. If anything happened to her, I honestly wouldn't even want to go on living.

Ken's pain must feel unbearable right now.

I hope he somehow finds the courage and strength to get through this eventually.

He will be in my thoughts.

And I hope anyone who reads this thread stops for a moment to remember what is truly important in life.

This poem has always comforted me during times of grief:

        Rose Beyond the Wall
        by A.L. Frink

        A rose once grew
        where all could see,
        sheltered beside
        a garden wall,
        And as the days passed
        swiftly by,
it spread its branches, straight and tall...

One day, a beam of light
        shone through
        a crevice that had
        opened wide ~
        The rose bent gently
        toward its warmth
        then passed beyond
        to the other side

        Now, you who deeply
        feel its loss,
be comforted ~ the rose blooms there ~
        its beauty even greater now,
        nurtured by
        God's own loving care.

Ken you've always had my respect for being a true light here and I know many who believe the same.

The mind struggles to try to make sense of the times and seasons and as you know many of these things we'll never understand while still here.

While the assurance of being reunited with your granddaughter in that day when we're all called home to glory must seem such little consolation in the shock of such sudden loss in the here and now, it is in that hope I've placed my trust that the God of all peace would now comfort you and her mother with the peace of God which passes all understanding and keep you in his tender loving compassions until
that day when you will see her again with the joy only heaven knows when all tears shall be wiped away in the name of our Lord Jesus, amen.

Please know you are loved and not alone during this time.

Let me know if I can be of any help to you.

It hurts... I KNOW it hurts! Sometimes you just don't know how you will get over the pain... but you will! You, Barb, your son and daughter-in-law may feel all alone right now but you aren't! You have a Warrior family that cares a lot for you and all your family. If there were a way for all of us to teleport ourselves to your side, I'm sure that most of us would... but there isn't! All we can do is join you in your grief and tell you that we care for you and we are here to support you.

Something like this is NEVER easy but they say time heals all wounds... and it will! Yet time is something you just never had enough of with your granddaughter It's so sad that it takes something like this to remind all of us just how precious life is and that we should never take it for granted. Ken, I think you are one of the very few people who DID realize just how precious the time was when it came to your granddaughter and you spent some very quality time with her. You have absolutely nothing to regret when it comes to that!

You and Barb are one-of-a-kind people and you WILL get through this. It may not seem like it right now, but you will! Somehow, you will come out on the other side and you will be stronger. You will touch other peoples lives like you never could have before. You will rise above this and you will endure. You will be forever changed, but that is what life is all about, isn't it... change? We finally have to accept the change, we learn to adjust to it and we move on even though it may be heart breaking... and I KNOW you are heart broken right now!!!

Ken, just know that you and Barb are loved, admired and respected! You have touched many lives and your reward will be great. We are all with you during this time and you are not alone. From all the folks down at Stumpwoody Holler, we offer our condolences and tell you that we are truly sorry for your loss!

Take care and God bless you!

Senseless tragedy. My heart and prayers go out to Ken and his family. These stories always suit to remind me that it's not always cancer, earthquakes or bombs killing us. Life can be extinguished by the most innocuous of circumstances.

I'm weeping as I read all of these posts. Partly for you Ken, knowing how much your heart is breaking. And partly as I remember the death of my 2 year old great-grandaughter a few years ago. You think that you'll never get through the sorrow - but you do. You wonder why it happened and if you could only turn back the clock - but you can't.

But somehow, God gives you the strength to pick up the pieces of your heart, to hold onto all those wonderful memories, and even to let yourself love another child someday as completely as you once did.

Ken, my prayer for you and your family is that you will hold tight to the memories and experience the peace that passes understanding.

Celebrating life and sharing those treasured memories has always been a great help for me in the healing process of losing special people in my life.

Will say a special prayer for you and your family and share a favorite quote for your special granddaughter...

I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love. Leo Buscaglia

Thanks Chris for making us all aware. Just a quick suggestion for consideration! If Ken and his family might be open to the idea of a memorial web site for his granddaughter, maybe some warriors might be willing to help out. Could possibly include the raising of funds in her memory to help out other young children in some Special way...

Just thought I'd make that suggestion...

I know that words are just not enough when we lose someone we love, but thankfully we have each other to reach out to and take what comfort we can. My wife and I are heartbroken to hear of her death and our thoughts and prayers are with her, her parents and family.

For years now, Ken and I have talked nearly every day and Olivia was a constant presence in our conversations. Always in the background, laughing, babbling away, occasionally bugging Ken to get off the computer to go for a walk or outside to play.

I've talked to Olivia from time-to-time (when she could tear herself away from the cartoons) as have my own children, and in many ways she has touched our lives, halfway around the world.

We've been there when she wasn't feeling well, when she was feeling great, through walking and potty training, when she was happy (almost always) or cranky (rarely), and through it all, Ken and Barb's everlasting love for her was always present.

Like so many others, I know the unbearable loss of a child firsthand and so my heart goes out to Olivia's parents and family. Your little angel is with God and knows how much you love her and miss her and she misses you. She would want you to take comfort in knowing that she is at peace and waits patiently for you in heaven.

To my friend Ken, I want to say that for the short time Olivia was with us, always remember that you made her time on earth a special one, full of joy and happiness...and that is something to hang on to. Your special bond with her, from the day she was born is something that will always be with you. You know just how much she loved you and she knows how much you cherish her.

We'll pray for her my friend, and for your family. And we are here for you no matter what you may need.

    Hello Ken,
I don't know you but I sure do know how you are feeling right now. You have got to understand life continues. You can't bring back your beloved daughter, it is the will of God to have him back and there is absolutely nothing you can do about that.

Worry from now till next year, you will not have her back. All you can do is to move on. Remember he has promised a safe landing and not a smooth journey. He knows what is best for you and he will surely do the best for you and your family.

My deepest most sincerest condolences and continued prayer to Ken and his family in this tragic moment.

As a father who has been blessed by the power of the internet to spend time with my young children daily I cannot fathom the pain of a loss so dear.

    Psalm 23
    The LORD is my shepherd,
I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
    He restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
    for his name's sake.
    Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
    You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
    forever.

In your time of morning may you and your family find comfort.

It doesn't feel like it, but it will.

I wish you peace and a lifetime of fond memories of your prescious angel.

Here's some thing I wrote for my daughter. Maybe it will bring you some comfort:

    It Was Only Moment

It was only a moment that we knew you,
    But in that moment,

    Your Strength taught us Strength,
    Your Courage taught us Courage,
    Your Love taught us Love.

It may have only been a moment that we knew you,

  • Ken;

I cannot possibly imagine what you are feeling right now... I know that I don't know you that well, but my heart goes out to you and your family. I know that you will be strong, and you will make it through this - and while your heart aches for her now, with time it will get easier. Don't be afraid of it getting easier - you will never forget her, and she would want you to go on.

You were her Grandpa. You were the special man in her life who made her feel special, and filled her days with love and laughter. And now, to return the favor of all of the love and caring you gave to her throughout her short life, she is watching out for you from heaven - waiting patiently to be back in your arms, to spend eternity with eachother reliving your happiest moments over and over again.

If you need anything - anything at all, don't hesitate to let me know. We are all here for you when you're ready to return, and you are in our thoughts and prayers while you grieve with your family.

Peace be with you - all of you...

Oh my goodness, this is horrible. As a father of 5 and 3 year old girls I can't imagine what I'd do if something happened to them.

My sincerest sympathies to you and your family Ken.

    Hi Chris

Thanks for letting us know about Ken and that such a tragic and unfortunate loss has occurred, especially as it's very hard to accept that such a thing could happen.

I am quite new to this forum, so I haven't met Ken or spoke to him before but my thoughts, prayers as well as my deepest respect and sympathies are with Ken and his family.

    Best wishes

To All of My Warrior Family,

To say my family has been overwhelmed with your outpouring of love, prayers, and condolences for our Olivia Grace and our family is an understatement. I have read every single post and have told Paul and Tammy, Olivia's parents and other family members of your love and concern for us.

I apologize for taking so long to acknowledge all of these wonderful messages. But to be truthful with you folks, each time I read the new messages, my heart became so overwhelmed, I could not find the words to express my gratitude.

We will bring Olivia Grace home tomorrow afternoon. There will be no formal service, as Paul and Tammy only want to have family and friends that are considered family present; when we bring her home. We then will have a private time to say our goodbye.

If you would please reach out to your loved one and give them a loving hug, which was the kind of hug that our Olivia would give to her PaPa and MaMaw. Often times she would reach out to get Barb, me, her Mom and Dad for a family hug.

Then other times when we ask for a hug and a kiss, she would look at us and say "No Way PaPa, not today". Then she would turn around and flash that mischievous smile at you and giggle. And then if we were lucky we would get a kiss from her or at least a blown kiss.

She was our joy and we are going to miss her more than words can express.

Thank you all so much for caring.

    Ken, Barb, Paul and Tammy

      Ken,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. It's occurences like this that tend to remind us that we shouldn't take life or those in our lives for granted, and that we should always find a moment to express our love to them and gratitude for the gifts they grace our life with. From what you shared about Olivia, it's definite that there was always expression of love. Understandably, it will be difficult for you all to find peace with this tragedy, but if you can, rather than focusing on the events that lead to it, remember and celebrate all the wonderful times you were able to share with her and the gifts she brought to your life. I know that Olivia is in a very peacefully happy place, running around with her mischiveous smile, giggling, sending you lots of hugs, blowing kisses to you and surrounding you with love. God bless.

        Ken,

I can't begin to imagine your family's sorrow. As a father I can empathise, but no amount of imagination can come close to what you all must be going through.

Please accept my and my family's sympathy and ongoing thoughts.

My condolences to you Ken and your family during this difficult time and great change in your family. There are no words that can really express how devestating something like this can be, but know that you have a community of people who are sending you love and support. I don't know you but I am well acquainted with loss and it how that feels. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.
