How do you "optimize" a sales funnel?

I know it has to do with tracking and conversions, but what variables do you track?

I have my sales funnel set up but I don't want to waste money sending traffic to it until I know how to optimize it for conversions. I want to start testing the funnel to ensure that it starts converting than once it is, I can ramp up the traffic. I hope this makes sense.

I'm stuck on this.

Thanks.

Well, the first thing you need is some traffic - how else do you want to optimize?

Then you pick one item at a time and change it.

So, lets say you pick the background color.

50% of the traffic you send to blue background and 50% you send to green background.

Then you count how many conversions and you will know what works better.

      Yes, I get that.

But I am paying for it so, I want to ensure I know what to do when I get it, so I can correct things and increase my conversions.

Are there certain variables I should look for? Is there a uniform list of variables to track?

You have traffic. That means a certain amount of visitors.

Then you have spend money on that traffic.

Then a certain number of people buy or take action.

And then you have a certain amount of money that you make.

That is what you track. Money in an money out.
Or traffic in and traffic converted.

    Word of advice...

Start optimizing your squeeze page first.

    Then optimize from there.

Always optimize at the starting point, onwards.

Just my two cents. I think it could take you a long way.

    Stay cool

I'd have to agree with Sarevok. Test your squeeze page first.

I usually start with my headline. What I do is:
    1. create two versions of my squeeze page with different headlines.
    2. Buy a 100 click solo ad for each squeeze page.
    3. The one with the highest opt in rate wins.
    4. Continue to test your headline until you reach you see a 20% increase.
    5. Select another thing to click like your call to action, sub headline, benefits, bullet points, features, etc)
    6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 until you reach a 50% to 60% opt in rate.
    7. Move on to the next part of your funnel (i.e. sales page etc)
    8. Once you've optimized your opt in rate, it's time to optimize your conversion rate.

Rinse and repeat. Hope that helps...

      Thank you eon,

that's what i was looking for. Since I'm spending money, I want to ensure that I don't waste it. NOW, I know what to do.

I'll take the same process for my emails as well.

      Thanks again.

if you dont want to spend any money, look for click banking partners to see if your squeeze page converts 40% and up.

*Keep in mind you will have to return the same amount of clicks back to them

I suggest you spend $40 for a 100 click solo ad to test your squeeze page.

    You track everything!
Start by adding Google Analytics. Also Google 'Google Fix' and add that to each page of your website. Aweber is also good for tracking your emails including open rates etc.

I track using AdTrackzGold. This is an excellent low price package that is available as a PHP script for HTML sites and as a plug-in for WordPress sites.

Buy it, read the manual and set it up, it is not difficult. You can monitor different campaigns and also sub-campaigns.

Take for instance an index.html home page that you want to track leads to. You can create a clickable tracking link to this page. However, you can add sub-campaigns to this clickable link and use them in different place and the link all goes to the same index page but AdTrackzGold keeps statistics on what link was clicked to get to the Index page.

It really is simple and easy to set up and use.
