This Photographer Just Made $15K In One Day On Instagram

Daniel Arnold had $90.03 in his bank account on Thursday when he had a clever idea: Why not sell some photos on Instagram?
On the eve of his 34th birthday, Arnold didn’t have a clue how he was going to make rent for the following month, so, at midnight, he posted this message on Instagram:
Hello, I just turned 34 this second. For one day only I am selling 4Ã--6 prints of whatever you want from my Instagram archive for $150 each. I swear I will never sell anything this cheap again. If you’re interested, send a screenshot of the photo(s) of your choice to arnoldaniel@gmail.com (one d) and I will send a paypal invoice, followed by a signed print. Easy peasy. Happy my birthday. I love you
This has less to do with Instagram and more to do with taking a chance on an idea.

Wow! That's a great story. The guy was definitely thinking outside the box. I also think he got some really great photos. I'm guessing a little luck was involved too. Mix those things together and you got a pretty inspiring story.

Just goes to show anyone can make money online.

Good for him, but he shouldn't have promised not to sell so cheap again, as it worked the first time. Money is much better than no money and no money is what he had before the sale.

Well, he made his offer very special by saying that. He wasn't like any other guy who is cheap all the time. He could make pictures for special days (like Valentines day) and do it a little more expensive/just as cheap. Often, customers don't complain if they can get something cheap again..

I agree, he even said this himself...

“And it’s not like I’m any kind of entrepreneur,” he adds. “I’m a business idiot.”

    I love stories like this!

At first, though, I was surprised that $150 was considered cheap. But realizing he is a professional photographer with 22,000 followers, there are bound to be those willing to pay that much for his work. Next time, I'm sure there will be those willing to pay even more.

  • A few things though... Reading the articles,

    a) He "built up" equity over time -- he had 22,000+ followers. "100" sales @ $150 each = 0.5% conversion rate. (Which, incidentally, is average for industry standards - usually 0.5-1%).
    b) Now that he uses the images for "commercial" purposes -- if he doesn't have the permission of the subjects (i.e., the 'naked' santa, etc), which I suspect he doesn't -- he may find that he has to start paying them back ("if" those people pursue it in court. Unlikely, since $15k is not a lot in the greater scheme of things, but possible).
    c) Just an interesting sideline... A "friend" of his works at forbes who wrote the article, thus helping to boost his 'post' sales...

Good on him, if I was him I'd extend the offer and squeeze every last penny out of it, it's not a lasting business model afterall

He used instagram like a ground for making money. Most of people use it like an instrument to make leads. That is the difference.
