I have noticed that for last few days, I have started to get some traffic from some search engine called bing.com. Is anybody familiar with it?

I have been getting a lot of traffic from bing, but as a user I can't stand it. Anytime I search for something it only gives me a few results and then shows me the results for other long tail keywords. Can we assume I know what I'm searching for? I tried using it for a few days instead of Google and it just annoyed me. I really hope they don't overtake Google.

Still in beta and supposedly testing some new advances with LSI and LSA which should prove to be interesting ... if not profitable ... for the right people. Just because most people go to McD's does not mean nobody goes to Joe's Grill you know ![]() Just my two cents for what it's worth |

I'm definitely seeing an increase in traffic from Bing. I had to look it up to see what it was.

Yep, Bing is Microsoft's new search engine, which in theory was supposed to have been unveiled and launched with a bang recently, but in reality got completely overshadowed and pushed into the proverbial corner by the Goggle Wave announcement and demos. An unfortunate decision for them, to release at the same time (although I guess they probably couldn't have known).

Just an FYI. Tonight during the Lakers Orlando game they are running TV Ads. So I guess they are going to do the usual Microsoft Spend and fix later thing.

I thought it was some virus redirect when I first came upon it. I guess I'm getting used to it now but since I use Google most the time, it isn't an issue for me.

I doubt Google has much to worry about. IMO, it's Yahoo that needs to be worrried, as I bet bing.com will affect Yahoo's market share more than Google's.

I'm hooked on Google but Bing is FUN! Lots of toys in there. And the images scroll forever in the images area! And check out the video section. It plays the video simply when your mouse is hovered over it. I look forward to having more time to spend with it and learn about marketing for it. They needed this, because it appears Google Wave is going to change the world. |

There are MANY search engines out there - all with different algorithms and all that. As a matter of fact, i'm still waiting for cuil.com to take off. However, I just know at the end of the day most search engines (especially the newer ones) are based off google in some way. So at the end of the day - as long as google is happy with our website - other search engines will be too... js |

I tried Bing now sometimes and it looks ok. And if MS starts an advertising campaign, then there might be a start to get a little more independance of Google for Webmasters

Yeah, I noticed on my analytics account that I was getting some traffic from them and then 3 days later my site is nowhere to be found, but my dear old Google still has my placement for that particular site. So I'm not liking bing right now lol.

I don't believe Microsoft will ever take over Google in the search department in this lifetime, it Google's main business. They keep trying and failing which is not so bad in itself, but I just think they have re-branded too many times, and it means they're doing something wrong. However, who knows? The internet was a much different place when Google started and I don't know how long their site was there before it really took off, but it sure took off fast once the word got out there. Google is the best example of viral word-of-mouth advertising. Google has recently started advertising their own products and such on TV but when they had already made a billion dollars I don't think they'd spent a cent on advertising themselves (maybe on their own google adwords but that was their own advertising business. I'm talking about TV, radio, paying for advertising through other businesses). So yeah, Google is a unique case and even though Microsoft is successful in their unique business model, I don't think they will get ahead of Google in Google's main business model.

I like what bing is doing on the front end. The design is mostly clutter free as well and simple to get around with a twist of uniqueness. I noticed I am still in the top rankings for my keywords on bing just like how I am over in google, so that was nice to know. In regards to Cuil, I think many warriors can agree the interface of the results page is somewhat of a "confusing text bomb" (not to be pessimistic, but I get overwhelmed with the results page and just leave) From a marketing perspective, I've been told from friends who work in media that Bing is doing alot of media buys and partnerships in mainstream media (hulu, ad spots, etc). |

I just don't understand Microsoft. They saw the success of the iPod and went out and created the Zune, which I have never seen an actual person use, I've only seen the display in stores. Now they see all the success of Google and decide to go out and create a search engine and try to be the best at that, even though they have already failed in the past. Meanwhile, Windows Vista has about the worst reputation I've ever seen for an OS. I don't understand why they don't master their flagship product and then expand from there. Is a secure OS that doesn't crash and isn't easily hacked and exploited really too much to ask from a company that got its start as an OS developer? Oh yeah, I forgot, Microsoft's really in the business of ripping off other people's ideas and marketing them as their own. No originality or standard of excellence. They really remind me of the term "jack of all trades, master of none." It just goes to show that you don't have to be the best to make the most money. People will happily pay for mediocrity even when there is a better option available. It's very typical that they have billions in their advertising budget. They're all about marketing. It seems like no one over there thinks to put the billions towards developing a superior product that will foster word of mouth advertising which in turn creates a loyal fan base. Sorry for the rant. I watched Pirates of Silicon Valley again the other day and it always does this to me I guess I just demand excellence from the products I use and the companies I do business with. To me Microsoft is like Wal-Mart, yeah they have the most money, but they also peddle crap. Right now I think bing is just something new that has a few novelties. It was overshadowed by the Wave announcement and I think once Wave is released it will really kill a lot of the bing buzz. Hopefully Microsoft will get a clue and go back to creating a Windows that people will buy because it's a good product, not because it's all they know and what they use at work. |

I just saw the commercial for it. From what I can gather, it seemed like it was a user supported search engine, although I don't get that from the website.

I've found that MSN search will often give me better info than Google will. I know that when writing about professional topics, MSN sometimes will give more varied results than Google. Last week, one of my Google searches got me four pages' worth of duplicate content--all from the top 10 rankings. And five of the non-dupe rankings were basically rewrites of the other stuff. MSN provided me with more varied results, for which I was grateful. I know that Google has the broader superiority but it is not always the best tool for the job--and I'm talking from a user perspective here, not just a marketer's perspective. I'll be happy if Bing can give Google a little run for its money. G has been the top player for too long now and they've turned into something of a bully. Plus, the people at Microsoft won't give you some b.s. pretense about not being in it for the money. |
