Tactfully Handling JVs who Don't Email Their Entire Lists...

Before approaching someone to do a webinar swap/jv cross promo, I anonymously optin to their list, so I can confirm what they're sending (and who else they work with). I tell them this beforehand, so they know I'll be monitoring their activity/compliance.

These are set up as in "we each email our lists to cross promote each other's webinars, you promote for me and I'll promote for you".

The problem, is that occasionally (20%+) of the time, they'll say they will email their entire list, but fail to do so. I know because I didn't get an email promoting whatever they agreed to, in my anonymous 'seed' email account I'd set up to check these things.

Years ago I'd just simply not work with them ever again. But I realize now maybe I should include some incentive to all jvs who email 100% (other than aff commisshes; since these are lead-generation swaps), to boost email rates.

Any thoughts on this? Filed under the 'jv shenanigans' folder...

I wouldn't worry about it too much.

If they are a "good" affiliate they likely have different segments of their list that are interested in different things. So sometimes it can actually hurt conversions if they mail their entire list.

However, if they agree to something (like mailing their entire list) and don't fulfill the agreement I would think twice before working with them again.

I think your idea of an incentive is a good idea. I've also created content for the affiliates to use to pre-sell the product. Something like a rebrandable software or ebook.

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

    Cheers,

Well you said you told them before hand but then it sounds as if you did it without them knowing you did it.

Either way I would start with your webinar first and if you don't see it come in then do not do there's and say something about it.

Ask and make sure you ask beforehand how many do you have that you will send too. Can I see the optin page you use to get those subscribers ect. No this wont work for everything but neither will placing a email in there list and you tell them its to make sure they mail.

You could give me your email and I could mail you only.

Let's do a little math here to see if this could be happening. Let's say you and I do a jv cross promotion.

Your list has 10,000 people on it.
My list has 100,000 people on it.

When you mail to your 10,000 I'm only going to mail to 10,000 of the 100,000 on my list and your email is most likely not going to be in that 10,000 I emailed.

Could this be what you are seeing happen?

Plus can't you tell if someone doesn't mail. I mean if you have maybe 3 percent come to your webinar from your list and you have another webinar with someone else sending invites and you hit 10 percent that will tell you they mailed out. If you have another 3 percent then they did not.

If you're on their autoresponder series, you wouldn't get their email blast. More than likely, I'd guess it's a combination of that, and they're only mailing the lists they think are relevant to your offer or maybe only buyers or certain lists they want, because it's ultimately their decision.

Next time it happens, ask why you're on their list and you didn't get an email.

good points; thanks all ... it's just one of the disappointing things about working with others, is many times they're not honest or upfront. in a recent talk with a potential jv partner, at least I brought up the request that they email at least 80% of their list, something specific like that.

I do a lot of stratified emails, to customers vs noncustomers, autoresponder sequences by buyer category and more, very targeted, so that's useful... when working w/jvs I always send to my entire list as promised, I'd expect others to do that.

good point re 10k vs 100k; sometimes they'll say "if you email to at least 50k in your db I'll do the same, how many should we send to?" though that becomes a bit more complicated.

You need to find better affiliates. If they are trying to doop you then they are not the sort of affiliates you want to be partnering with.

There are a lot of people who see affiliates or cross-promoters as what they are, an additional sales team. Any contact they send your product to that you wouldn't have otherwise had access to is a bonus.
More exposure to your product, and if the product is solid, converts and sells well, then I say just go for it.
    Just sayin'
