I am currently making an affiliate website with wordpress, and my question is can you do affiliate marketing with all the wordpress themes? I mean does it depend on a theme, or you just need to install the right plugins?

The theme isn't too important. Just choose one you like and go with it.

Later, you can switch it around and see if different types convert better for you, but getting started, just look for one that looks nice and has room for your optin box and a few banners.

But when you later put products on your site, that direct to the sales page, you will need to install some kind of plugins, right?

You can add an HTML widget to any wordpress theme.

Then, inside that widget you can put HTML for a banner ad, optin box or anything you need that works with html, like adsense, amazon ads or just about anything.

You can put affiliate links directly into your content too.

Do a google for "html for links" and you'll find a few websites that teach you how to create backlinks. They're something along these lines: <a href="url">Link text</a>

Then, when you publish to your site, you'll see Link Text and not the html code.

Creating links for banners is very similar, and most affiliate pages that provide banners also provide the html text for the banners. Just make sure you change the affiliate link to be your affiliate id.

Also, there's a free plugin called Pretty Links.

It allows you to create links that will be http://yoursite.com/PRODUCTNAME instead of ugly affiliate links like http://productsite.com/affiliatelink?=id?3646485

It looks a lot better, more professional and people actually click on these cloaked links more freely than affiliate links. The plugin, Pretty Links is simple to use too.

Hopefully that answers your question and moves you ahead in the right direction.

Victor really nailed it with that last post. But just test, test, test. Go out and look at affiliate sites in related niches and TAKE NOTES of what appeals to you and what doesn't. Come up with an idea of what your 'ideal' site would look like and just build towards that.
Doesn't need to be perfect right away, you can always modify and adjust as you go. That's the beauty of wordpress. But have an end-goal in mind. And think from your site visitor's point of view.

I read about Flexibility theme. Google it. It is free and very customizable. I am not using it but maybe will try it. I think if you want to upgrade from free and get more premium themes within it they are $9 a piece.

Wordpress default themes work great for affiliate sites, there is no need to buy any theme in the beginning, concentrate on writing informative and interesting content about your product or service and generate some traffic, if it returns good then spend your money to purchase the theme related to your industry or interest.
