First Online Business, How Would You Run This?

So in January I finally got my website up and running. The website is for dog training and I made individual training videos that are available to stream once purchased. I figured if people are still buying physical hard copy dog training books, they would buy videos that can be accessed instantly.

Obviously there are other dog training videos out there, and even for free, but my selling point is that my training techniques can be done with no equipment, no clickers, training collars, etc and you literally can start getting results the same day.

I have not invested in SEO or other marketing because quite frankly I can't afford it and as of right now I haven't really made any money. I post on my Facebook page which is pushing 400 likes, however each post usually only gets seen by like 15 people.

My question is do you think my model is good and I just need to invest in real marketing? Another idea I was thinking was to make the videos free and try to just sell ads on my site. I have videos on YouTube that shows the end result of the commands, not sure if I should put those somewhere on my site?

Here is a link to it: Bright Dog - Positive Dog Training For Your Dog

Any and all advice and suggestions would be really helpful. This is the first time doing this and I feel like I have some good original content, I just am not sure how to make some money. Thanks for the help!

Kudos to you for putting in the work, Alex.

Nice looking site; clean and clear.

Your USP is great; messaging needs a little refining...but there's a variety workable angles to develop a compelling message for your target market.

Just from a quick glance - here's 2 quick but crucial suggestions...

    You're not capturing leads

It's absolutely critical to capture the email addresses of ANY potential customers to your site. It's in the follow-up, that most sales are made...and they are the ones with the "cold-hard cash".

Your business model may need an overhaul.

    1) Your price points for individual purchases may need to be lowered if that's the approach you insist on taking. If it is, model what Mike's doing to sell drum lessons here - Mikes Lessons.
However, I think your package deal is the way to go...lots of opportunity to create some compelling copy and really arouse their need to purchase.

    2) Regardless of your marketing approach (free or paid), you NEED a dedicated landing page to capture leads along with an irresistible sales page to sell the package.

There are a few other recommendations I could give you; craft a more persuasive message, "The Facebook Effect", the use of a survey to help hone in on your avatar and create engagement.... but I'll leave it at that for now.

If you wanna PM me to help you out, feel free ... consider it goodwill.

    Hey Alex

That's a nice looking site. Very professional looking.

Other than the fact that you've taken on a very competitive niche the main problem I see is that it isn't instantly obvious what a visitor is supposed to do once they get to your site.

    Sign up for a newlettter?
    Buy a product?
    Fill out a survey? etc.

You need a clear call to action. Website visitors have a very short attention span and if they can't figure out what you want them TO DO within the first few seconds they'll just leave.

The video also looks really good but again it's not clear what the next step after watching it should be.

Try editing the video so it's laid out in the A-I-D-A format.

Action - get their attention right away with a bold headline (or opening statement) eg. "let me show you how to correct your dog's behavioral problems in just 10 mins a day without using any equipment even if nothing else has worked in the past". - Not the best example but hopefully you get the idea.

Interest - List out common problems your market is having so they know you're talking to them

Desire - go into a bit more detail about the problem(s) and introduce your training as the solution

Action - the most important part. Tell them to DO something - click below to buy my course now or sign up for my newsletter or whatever it is you want them to do. But you must tell them to do something.

Hope that helps a bit and best of luck.

I don't send traffic traffic to opt in pages anymore. I Do This instead...

Traffic is the name of the game when it comes to online selling. You should have a significant amount of traffic for you to capture good leads. With your USP, you can sell anywhere in the world since you are selling a video. But here are some things I think you should do:

    1. Build your Online image
    - Your idea is pretty clever and new so it requires more exposure and information. You can write blogs (I suggest have a separate blog which discusses on the benefits of Training Videos, it's ease of use, etc.) and put linkbacks targeted to your site, FB page, etc. This will establish your identity as an Online Dog Trainer. Be someone in authority so that when they need a service same as yours, you will be the first one that posp in their head.

    2. Write a Quality Onsite content
    - You should engage your visitor not just to visit but to stay and read your contents. If they find your contents interesting, you can get the most organic shares and SEO every Online Marketers are craving for! Always remember that to build your customer's trust sharing and teaching is one good way of selling.

    3. Be more personal
    - Direct your campaign in a more personal way. I.E. if someone send an inquiry, make it sure to get back to him within 24hrs and always address them on their first name. Remember that the sweetest sound on someone's ears is his name. Make it like you are not just here to sell but to be of help.

If there is anything that I can be of good help, just give me message. I will be more than willing to help you.

    Hope this helps!

Good job on getting your site up!

Have you considered building a dog lovers/trainers community? A forum where people can share ideas just like warrior can be very powerful.

You could offer your videos on a membership sort of model where they get access to all your videos and community for a monthly fee.

You can offer some for free as a teaser and then tier them up.

    Hey Alex,

Great looking site, so far, so good.

I agree with what's been said above, you need a better flow process for people on your site.

I watched the video and had no idea what you wanted me to do next. Where are the videos, do I buy them, are they free?

Captain Obvious would point out you're selling them and you told me so. So I found them on the Training Videos page, but most people who come are going to be somewhat confused, because you aren't offering that streamline process of step 1, step 2, step 3.

So creating a better flow on your page would be my first step.

    What flow you ask?

I'd rename your free video to something that sounds more enticing. Like, "5 Simple Tricks for Faster Dog Training" or something along those lines. (i didn't watch the whole free video, but there's some good stuff in there)

Then create an optin page on your home page to get that video.

Then you can send emails to people who are interested and you'll get better conversion rates than if you were just putting them straight onto a sales page on your home page.

I'd also add a special bonus to your complete package to make it more appealing than buying itemized lessons.

I'd also reshoot your landing page video and talk a little slower and add in some testimonials if you have any and a strong call to action to get started now and sign up for the free video lesson before starting the main course.

Have you done any keyword research? Content that ranks in pulls in search engine traffic is great for any website. Also, have you tried memes on your facebook page or contests to give away cool dog swag in exchange for likes, comments and shares?

I think Victor gave some very solid advice.

I watched the entire free video and counted 8 different topics covered over nearly 9 minutes. I'd break this content down into about 5 separate videos. I'd also get the videos transcribed. Next, as already mentioned, add a opt-in form. It's important that this form be above the fold. As an incentive to sign-up, offer "8 highly effective dog training techniques - FREE". In your free video, you mention several things many dog owners do wrong (saying no or bad, petting on the head, etc.) So, a headline like "Avoid these common training mistakes that actually make your dog's behavior worse!" would work too. (these type of headlines seem to be popular at the moment) Drip feed the videos (and transcripts) as an email course using Aweber or similar. Include a link (and call to action) to buy your other videos in each email.

Next, try to connect with your audience on a more personal level. Tell us about yourself. Why are you so passionate about dogs? How did you become so knowledgeable about dog training etc. (position yourself as an expert)

I'd also make the photo on your homepage header higher resolution and perhaps slightly more zoomed in.

Show what you're selling right on the homepage. Don't make people dig for it. A small strip of thumbnails with descriptions/prices and a clear call to action.

Well, that's my take, good luck with it.

I am a big fan of sites that will get your business going in the social media world. Having a nice looking site is great but you need a solid conversion rate and a steady supply of hits. Try looking into cheap/free options like Rimsing or Heyo to promote your website on Facebook.

Nice site. Do you look for relevant facebook groups for this niche to post to? Use Twitter there may be dog hashtags to hangout and post in?

What about posting a snip-it of a few of the videos on youtube and rank it high up to get more views/ traffic to your site.

Wow thanks for all the great suggestions guys!

I do have a bunch of videos on YouTube to shows the end result...maybe I need to figure out how to use those on my site to sell the videos.

Also, what is the difference between squeeze page, landing page, and sales page? They can't all be the same thing?
