Is Web Design A Good Business To Get Into?

Lately I have been thinking about starting up my own Web Design business. I am fairly good at creating sites (self thought) with Wordpress (I dont know HTML or CSS). And since I don't know HTML or CSS, I am wondering if it would raise a red flag to potential costumers because it may appear that I am a newby and not experienced.

Since I am just starting, I am thinking about charging a flat rate of $500 for a full complete website with unlimited pages and a free logo.

Any tips or advice from the experts out there?

    Don't call yourself a Web designer until you can at least understand the basics of coding, have some respect for the profession.

    While anyone can "build a website" using WordPress, how good will it be? How many sites does one have to build to get good enough to offer real value? Why would you advertise as a pro before you are really good? Is there any business sense in being just a "me too" developer (or even less qualified than the average)?

    Can anyone do a really good job at building websites without the experience of doing many first?

    In my opinion a WordPress website (far from "requiring no programming skill") if built without knowing HTML, CSS and at least some PHP, is bound to be a weaker, less professional website than it should be! There will be no chance for the supposed "developer" to build something that stands out, that incorporates their maximum creativity and that gives clients the value they expect and deserve.

    And if there is nothing "unique" (just another "me too") about your Unique Value Proposition, your business cannot be a success - unless your "unique" element is just your low price. But with so many offshore developers in countries where their expenses are extremely low, it's extremely hard to succeed by competing only on price.

    My advice is:
    Set yourself a "homework assignment" to build 6 great WordPress websites for your developer's portfolio. Build them for friends and family, or for local businesses at your own cost, or for cost plus a percent of their added profits (which will be hard to track and prove).

    Yes it is a good business to get into, don't you see how many people on here who want websites and website related services done for them, from setting squeeze pages, to installing WP, changing dns settings etc, etc.

    I am a web designer/developer myself

    And no it will not really matter to MOST of your customers if you know HTML or CSS or whatever they only care about the results. I have a web design business(bobson consulting corporation), 10 years ago when i started i use to hand code, using php, html, javascript and all, then WP started getting popular and plus users wanted to make changes to their site, back then i would have to manually create the CMS, it was a headache but i use to charge for it and make more money, in the old days you could easily tell someone their site will cost 5000, 10000 and people would pay it. One thing you should not do is charge a flat rate, why? because customers don't really know what they want they say they want this they will then come back and say do that and so on, so you charged a flat rate and you just did 1500 dollars worth of work, believe you will be pissed off. Give a range or an estimate instead.

    In my opinion, you are just looking for a job not a business. I used to be a Graphic designer and web developer.
    And yes, you can make 1000-2000 per month but before you get those big projects.
    You will need to build a strong portfolio and be smarter than your competition.

    Using the term "web designer" is a bit over-stretched. As per your question, I would advice that you learn a bit of HTML, CSS, a client script language (javascript) and a server script language. Take note that you can always learn on the job, but it might have negative impact on your delivery and quality of service. Web designing is a good business; if you know all about the "how"

    I have yet to have a client ask me about my technical abilities. They do seem to be impressed with my results though.

    "Unlimited pages" may be fatal to your business. Let me recommend a 4-5 Page, Fully Customized Website as an Introductory Special.

    I tend to avoid the word "free." I use terms like included, no additional cost, etc.

    IMO web design is THE business to get into, especially if you want to hit the offline space. Charging a fair amount is great, but nothing beats recurring income from hosting and SEO services

        if it is your passion, then do it and of course it is a very profitable business.
        But if you just want a lot of money in a short time, please consider your decision, because it will be a lot of things you have to learn to design a website.
        If you do not enjoy it, it will only make you overwhelmed.

    Web designing is surely a good business to get into. But surely that is not a good way and a possible red flag to your experience potential costumers because some one will eventually find out that you are not well experienced. So try to experience out things and improve your basic skills .

    Don't charge flat fees. I think if you are wanting to gain customer and build a portfolio, you should learn some more skills - primarily design e.g css, javascript etc.

    Once you build up your portfolio, charge an hourly rate.

    Being a web designer is not just about creating websites. The real skill of the web designer is knowing what to do when something goes wrong with a clients site. Sorting out problems is a BIG part of the job and that's where real skill and knowledge comes in.

    Anyone (practically) can set up a Wordpress site, but only very few can troubleshoot a Wordpress site!

    Ask yourself these questions:-

    1. What would you do if someone's Wordpress site got hacked?

    2. What would you do if one of the plugins you use was not supported any more by those who created it?

    3. What would you do if one of your clients websites just disappeared from the internet?

    4. What would you do if your client asked you to oversee the sale of their website to another company?

    There are another 100 questions like this, but if you don't know the answer to these 4 questions then can you really call yourself a web developer?

    Please know I'm not trying to put you down here! I'm merely trying to illustrate the fact that web development is so much more than just making websites.

    I would encourage anyone to learn website development, after all it's a real marketable skill, both in the real world and on the internet. And you're unlikely to be out of the job any time as the internet is not going anywhere anytime soon.

    Attend to your education in this area and start off small. Web development is 50% learning the facts, code, etc, and 50% experience actually doing it!

    Web design is, was, and will continually be in extremely high demand. Just think of the massive amounts of brick and mortar businesses realizing they need a web presence.
    Think of the #s of internet marketers who need their own sites. The market is there, growing exponentially.
    It's not a matter of if it's a good idea, it's more a matter of how to position yourself. Your marketing strategy is going to be the key to your success.

    You need a lot of patience, though. Clients always seem to know better than you what looks good. It will make you wonder why they hired you in the first place.

    Are you sure about that? Modifying or maintaining month to month with payment is not bad, its good. Its monthly recurring income. Just don't be stupid not to charge for the month to month work.

    Web Design is definitely a lucrative business and with little coding skills, you can create WordPress sites. But if you want to create stunningly beautiful sites, then I recommend you learn the HTML, CSS, Javascript while you are already doing fair creating WordPress sites for clients.

I run a design company just started it a few months ago, but I've been designing since 2000 2001 for my own sites and thousands of adult sites you see today I did. Learn man learn everyday. Hell go to linda.com great place to get tutorials on anything you want to learn.

    1 thing what if your client ask you add a simple function, you add it but something goes wrong and takes down his sites/your sites one wrong " or ?> can stops a site in it's tracks.
    It's not hard to learn if you know where to go, linda's is great Hell I still use them when I want to learn something I don't know or want to brush up on.

    I Promise you learn HTML and css you will love it. If this isn't your passion like it is mine and many other designers it will be hard to learn, if you find it exciting every time you learn something new then you wont go wrong.

    Web design business is a lucrative business mostly if you can get offline clients that don't have an online presence. This way you bit the online competition

    However, like my fellow warrior have rightfully said you must be well experience in this field before you can start offering the services if you want to handle it yourself cause your basic experience is your list worries. Its beyond knowing just the basic cause most of us here even know all that too.

    If I were you I will outsource the service to experts with more experience that can deliver the Job so as not to disappoint my clients this way you acquire more knowledge in the process

    Web Design is a great business! When I was first getting started online I had no idea how to create a website using HTML, but I knew Wordpress really well so I would just contact local companies and ask if they wanted a website made for them. It's an easy way to make about $500 per week, you really only need one company to say yes every week and if you approach a lot of companies every day you should be able to get at least one by the end of the week

    Designing on Wordpress is not really classified Web designing. If you want to get into web design, I suggest you get familiar with HTML, CSS, PHP and Java. It's kind of disrespectful to assume that website designing can be done on Wordpress. A lot of web designers spend hours of their time coding to perfection and charge reasonable prices to get it done.

    Selling a wordpress based website design for $500 is kind of overpriced in my opinion but if you manage to find clients, then go ahead. It's easy money for you and can help you in the long run when you decide to start new projects etc.

    Okay, so first of all - many of you (if not all) think of a web designer as a person who writes CSS/HTML and "a little bit of javascript" ... this is extremely false!

    Web designer is a person who creates the visual concept for a website, or web application. The final work, a web designer usually delivers in a .PSD format - which is irrelevant to HTML/CSS/Javascript work (known as web development or front-end coding).

    A web designer may be responsible for, lets say, the wireframe, the color scheme and logo (if any), the look and feel of the user interface, but he does not have any responsibility on markup languages, such as HTML.

    If you want to make business by selling websites - then web design is just one of the few skills you need to have, in order to be competitive.

    My answer to your question is: if you can be competitive, and you survive - you will make good money.

      Web Design has nothing to do with knowing coding. You can hire people to do the coding for you. Web Design is about developing webspace that is Helpful AND Appealing to the user.

      Why did MySpace take a dive when Facebook came out? Was it because Zuckerburg knew coding? Or was it because he provided an easier, more visually appealing platform for people to mingle in?

      Web Design can be a good business to get into; That is, if you know what your 'Getting Into'. There's a lot more to selling websites than setting up wordpress.

      Just like any other business, you need to set up your own sales funnel.
      You need a way your customers can get information about you, so they can make an Informed Decision before purchasing.
      You need a way to accept payments, and Paypal may not be enough. If you sell to some local businesses, you may find yourself cashing more checks than you have Paypal receipts.
      You need a way to track everything so you know what you've done, what you need to do, and what your deadlines are.
      You'll also need to know how to advertise a wide range of niches. Such as, what questions to ask in order to prepare the right content.

      Starting a web design business requires a basic knowledge in a wide range of marketing topics. Almost all of that knowledge can easily be learned in Affiliate Marketing, with faster results, and a much smaller initial investment.

      If you don't already know how to create lead funnels and drive targeted traffic, starting a web design business may be more work than success.

    I just love reading the input of our fellow warriors here. But I think we need to see the difference first between web design and web development

    When one speaks of web design, it is the customer-facing part of the website. A web designer is concerned with how a site looks and how the customers interact with it. Good web designers know how to put together the principles of design to create a site that looks great. They also understand about usability and how to create a site that customers want to navigate around in because it’s so easy to do.

    On the other hand, web development is the back-end of the website, the programming and interactions on the pages. A web developer focuses on how a site works and how the customers get things done on it. Good web developers know how to program CGI and scripts like PHP. They understand about how web forms work and can keep a site running effectively.

    Is Web Design A Good Business To Get Into?
    Yes, web design is a good business to get into as long as you have the skills and the resources. Keeping in mind that one of the most challenging aspects is how to market your business and how to get clients.

      When one speaks of web design, it is the customer-facing part of the website. A web designer is concerned with how a site looks and how the customers interact with it. Good web designers know how to put together the principles of design to create a site that looks great. They also understand about usability and how to create a site that customers want to navigate around in because it's so easy to do.

      On the other hand, web development is the back-end of the website, the programming and interactions on the pages. A web developer focuses on how a site works and how the customers get things done on it. Good web developers know how to program CGI and scripts like PHP. They understand about how web forms work and can keep a site running effectively.



      Yes, web design is a good business to get into as long as you have the skills and the resources. Keeping in mind that one of the most challenging aspects is how to market your business and how to get clients.

      Lots of people use the two terms "web design" and "web development" interchangeably, but they truly do have two different meanings. If you're looking for a new job or someone to build your website, you need to know the distinction.

    It is a good business because people need the service. But you have to be a good business person first. The key word is business...not web design. You will not want to be a one man show forever to make real money.

    That is a great rate to start at for building sites. I would highly suggest outsourcing most of the work on Odesk so that you are still in profit for your time.
