Opt-in or no Opt-in? Dilemma...

Hi Warriors,

I have a dilemma and wanted to get some opinions from others regarding requiring opt-in to download stuff from our site. We recently released an ebook that required opt-in to our mailing list and had only about 10 signups over a 3 day period. So, we decided to make the download public without requiring opt-in...

The result? 600+ downloads over two days. Now, the ebook has our site URL and tagline in the footer, our logo, plus a special discount coupon at the end for our services, so we're hoping at least to get some exposure and visibility.

Do you think this tactic is flawed? Should we be going for quality over quantity and revert back to the painfully slow opt-in process?

To your success,
Dee

I don't think it's a bad thing but my guess is, unless the ebook solves a very specific problem, most people who downloaded it, probably won't ever open it.

On the other hand, the ten people who opted in to receive it, have something invested in it and are more likely to have a look. Plus you have their email address so you can contact them in the future.

Thanks David. It's a WordPress user guide for complete beginners, so I'm hoping that the people who downloaded it will have had good reason to and at least glance through the contents. On a depressing note, though, we've had zero enquiries in 600+ downloads, so you may well have a point.

Dee, there's likely to be more to this than a simple opt-in/no opt-in answer. For a start, where is your traffic coming from? Are your visitors arriving "warm"? There's a huge difference between converting traffic from, say, a search result, and converting from a topic-related recommendation. And the nature of visitors from search results will vary depending on the keywords used.

Your site seems to be aimed at those looking for WordPress hosting. Are you actually attracting WordPress beginners? Are they business or consumer?

If you know the probable intentions of your visitors, and what they're expecting to see on your site when they arrive, you can tailor your offer accordingly.

Also, it might be worth trying a separate, stand-alone page just featuring your eBook offer. An opt-in on the side of an otherwise busy landing page can work, if the site is heavily content-based and suitably targeted, but when it's primarily business-focused, such as yours seems to be, the sidebar can get overlooked.
