Help! Keyword Research Tools Driving Me Crazy

So, I used my friends copy of Micro Niche Finder to find some keywords - then brought those keys into my copy of Market Samurai to analyze them further.

Thought I found some gems, so just to make sure before I went to town - I checked with the Google Keyword Tool.

The search volume was wayyyyy lower than what Market Samurai was telling me - and Micro Niche Finder was some where in between.

My questions are:

  • Why are all these tools so out of sync if they are using the same basic data?
  • Should I be using Local or Global search results - which one will most accurately reflect the traffic I can expect when I attain that #1 google ranking? It looks like Market Samurai is using Global.
  • Should I use Broad or Exact match? Market Samurai defaults to Broad Match - which seems strange to me - but maybe they know something that I don't.

Now I'm afraid I spent the last couple months ranking for keywords that have significantly lower search volumes than I believed.

Any input from my fellow warriors would be appreciated.

I would stick to exact matches than to broad. I use Google Keyword tool and Market Samurai. Some tools have their own mathematical equations in certain search output that can alter numbers. It seems to me Market Samurai is the best equation out there. I would stick with exact match especially when you are looking for a niche. IMHO

    Hi Burnsai,
These tools will never agree so don't hold your breath. In Google Adwords External Tool I always use exact match. I can recommend Market Samurai over Micro Niche Finder.

The Google Adwords External Tool search volume totals don't reflect actual Google-only search volume for a particular keyword. Therefore, those numbers are way too high.

    Generally speaking, choose local results.

Use exact match for keyword research, but bear in mind for organic search results, users are by far going to be using broad match.
