I spent money on HostGator and bought a domain, and got the ftp information in my email.

I then uploaded the files to the server via FTP, and can see the files uploaded on my HostGator account.

How come when I type in my domain name in the url address bar, I still can't see my webpage?

Do you have check the files, May be it will placed in wrong directory. Try to upload all files on your public_html folder. If you already do it, then contact hostgator support team. They will surely help you in this matter.

Did you set up your domain name to direct traffic to the hosting account (website)?

What webpage are you seeing when you type in your domain name? is it a landing page from your domain name provider or from your hosting provider?

No, I didn't do anything yet with the nameservers. Is that the problem?

Yes, you need to where you bought the domain
(ex. to Godaddy if you bought it from Godaddy)
and change the dns (domain name server) to the
ones from HostGator (they sent you these to your
        email).

Yes, as Dani 78 advised once you have updated the DNS info for your domain name to point at where your files are being hosted, the site will start to show up. However, it can take a few hours for the DNS update to propagate the internet, so you may not see it straight away!

Redirect the nameservers. Also you might need to clear the caches.
