Rank local Bar for it's City (Advice)

My friend owns a bar in our city and I wanted to give him better direction on how he could get it to rank for its search term.

I.e. City Name + Bar
City Name + Nightlife

Can anyone direct me to reading material on how to seo for Google Places or whatever for a business?

Since it's a local business, are there different backlinking techniques to use unlike the traditional seo and anchor text?

    I am not sure if there is any one single source to answer your question, but I am sure you could find some answers here: Offline Marketing Discussions

    Surely there is more to it than this, but citations + link building + Google Local/Places page + decent, well optimized site can often be enough. At least it can often boil down to just those things.

    Just because it`s your friend's website and not yours doesn`t mean you have to do anything different to rank it than you do for your own websites
