How many OTO's are too many?

Sometimes I find myself in a long continuous chain of One Time Offers and 'extras' after optin. Or after purchasing something.

Are some of these marketers kidding me already!? Page after page of 'once only' fantastic products. Or the price keeps reducing. Or bonuses keep piling up. Upsells, down sells, cross-sells etc. How many 'offers' are too many do you think?

Is there ever any good reason to hit people with too many?

I have seen 3 done by marketers, but some of them can be downsells aswell.

2 is a common amount done.

it can be tough to decide depending on your market. but first worry about making money before annoying your market.

but 3 seems to be the magic number from what i see. just went through frank kerns upsell/ downsell funnel. was pretty annoyed, but how can you hate on the president of the internet?

I'm sure I could manage to.
In the cases where the price of product keeps reducing every time I try to leave the page, makes me wonder if they will start offering 'Me' money at some point, just to look at the offer. Never happens.

President of the internet? Lol That made me laugh

He's good but let's not idolize people here.

I've seen funnels that interlaced 4 solid OTO's together; the first offer was coaching with the marketer (it was actually a team of guys), second was downsell on coaching, third was an upgrade on the product that was initially opt-in for, and fourth was a full done-for-you upgrade on the on the opt-in offer.

It didn't feel too bad, but I can see how some might say it can get a little much. This funnel converted on average of about 12 - 25 % by the way. So there is methodology to the madness and it's done for a reason.

I personally say it's all about presentation. You can have just one OTO and if it's not congruent to the presell...well that's just annoying lol

On average I can see a solid two step OTO funnel converting at a decent rate: initial OTO then downsell. Most often a good upsell/downsell funnel can convert at 3 - 5%, maybe more if the presentation is snazzy.

We're in world where presentation matters people. Provide value and make sure that value is super hyper evident from your sales copy (having hyped up sales copy can be effective but is controversial in some ways).

Do whatever works best. I myself prefer 2 upsells and 1 downsell.

But your mileage may indeed vary. Plus it also depends upon the type of audience (some folks love getting more and more options available).

More than two. By then I am bored. Doesn't matter what the next offer is.

I know it works for some who have no idea about IM but not for me.

Hitting the space bar hard a few good times gets me to the bottom of the page after a purchase, without scrolling, so that I can skip the content on the page and click to the next page and do it all over again. Most times, you can simply skip these upsell pages or shut your browser tab, as your actual download will be emailed to you, rather than just included on the final page (after all the upsell/downsells). A lot of frustration could be saved if more people remembered that.

I personally feel depressed when I see any OTO's, up sells, cross sells etc. It's really cool when OP's mention that the main product will work without the purchase of the OTO.

As a purchaser of products, I can't stand buying something and then right after the sale they make me feel like the purchase I just made isn't going to cut it without buying the OTO, but on the original sales page the original product was the greatest thing since sliced bread. ( I feel like asking for a refund right then and there)
I don't mind when the OTO is a self contained product that isn't required to make the original product work. but as soon as I see more the 2 oto's my Flag goes up and I'm not happy as a consumer. my 2 cents on OTO's from a consumer stand point.

This is good info. Thanks. I'm planning on a single upsell of resale rights to my info product. Any thoughts. Looking at $5 (100% comm) and $17 (50% comm)

I prefer to look the product over before I think about purchasing the resale (or PLR) rights. Therefore, I don't like the "this is the only time you'll see this offer" type pitch. I'd like to be able to come back and purchase later. That's a good message/reminder to put in a follow-up email series.

When your testing and tracking numbers show you that your conversions are dropping off.

If you have an upsell, a downsell, and then another upsell and your conversions are where you want them to be at, then keep doing what you are doing.

Or if adding another downsell to that funnel will keep your conversions the same or improve them then do that.

However, If you have 3 OTO's and your conversions are where you want them to be then don't drop the 3rd just because someone on some forum told you that 2 is better and that having 3 is annoying.

That would be just plain stupid.

Don't worry about annoyoing people, instead listen to what your numbers are telling you.

If you have an upsell and then a downsell, and then try and add another upsell, and your conversions drop dramatically well that should tell you something.

PS. I am assuming that you are using the terms OTO and upsell/downsell interchangeably.

I am, too. Which makes it hard to give a reasoned answer. They are not the same. OTO stands for One Time Offer, be it upsell, downsell or add-on. It means that a particular offer is only made once, and turning it down means it's gone forever.

Kind of like the observation that all Chinese are Asian, but not all Asians are Chinese.

If I turn down an offer, a single downsell makes sense, unless it's a straight discount. That kind of offer reeks of desperation, and gets my BS meter buzzing.

If I accept an offer, one attempt at either an upsell or add-on is fine. If I turn that down, hitting me with a final attempt using the opposite offer (add-on if I turn down the upsell and vice versa) is acceptable if it makes sense.

More than that, and I'm very likely to cancel the whole deal and go see if some joker wrote "Sucker" on my forehead...

Hi David - I do 3 like this.......

    FRONT END $7 ~> OTO $27 ->(no) DOWN SELL $17 ->(yes) OTO 2 $REBILL FOR D4U SERVICE/COACH OFFER

Gosh! I hope that makes sense. It's hard to explain without using mind map software. Maybe I'll do one.

Anyway, that's the GENERAL formal I stick to when crafting funnels. I've done HUNDREDS of funnels in many markets and this seems to work for me.

No need to over think it or make it more complicated.
