Help on choosing a product

Its interesting you mention **** Berry and green coffee bean as examples for products on a possible list to promote, as these are inherently "physical" products as opposed to information products.

Is this what you have set your heart on?

My company turns over around $1 mill pa on physical products but the strategy we use is very different to our information products sales.

I think that once you gave this some thought then 2 very distinctly different routes to earning will become apparent.

To answer your question about products becoming less topical, **** and Green Bean Coffee are weightloss enablers, which is an evergreen niche.

What I always recommend to new affiliates is focus on niches/subjects that you have some interest in.

You are going to spend a good amount of time writing about a given topic, you therefore want some degree of interest in it as this will help when it comes to writing. Once you have made some success of that, you could then expand into other markets that are a little newer to you.

I'm having the same problem! I've learned so much from this forum and feel that I am ready to take some decisive action but I'm stuck at the 'choosing a niche' stage.

I know that it is advisable to choose a niche in which you already have some interest but also advisable to choose a niche in which people have a pressing need and are willing to spend money to solve it. How do you reconcile these two?

Rob - how about marketing an informational product that reveals the benefits of **** Berries? If you feel that the market is already saturated then why not go for a niche within a niche and focus on a particular group that could benefit from **** Berries?

Hey Rob are you struggling to choose a product because you're intending to rank for the product name itself, for example Premium Garcinia Cambogia or Super Green Coffee Bean? If not it's pretty much irrelevant IMO. You can simply rank for long-tail, generic product categories. For example, best garcinia cambogia product or something like that.

The best way to choose a product would be to first identify what is the pressing need that your audiences in your niche would be looking at to solve. You can look at a variety of research techniques like Amazon, quantcast etc to help you. Generally, you should always seek to promote offers that are of high demand to stand a higher chance of making money. The above steps will help you to identify that.

While SEO and ranking are superb goals, they don't necessarily have to be your own traffic sources. So as previously mentioned, focus on niche selection first. If you wind up in a niche with a lot of competition, drill down a bit deeper and get more targeted.
And then consider other methods of traffic in addition. Sure SEO and organic traffic are great and 'technically free' but require a lot of time and maintenance. Targeted paid traffic, while requiring an investment, doesn't take much time.

Before choosing a product, look for buyers. Look for forums in your niche and see what people are buying – and not merely what problems they have, because they may have these problems but perhaps they are not willing to pay anyone to find a solution.

You should find people who are buying solutions for their problems, and then, sell them a similar solution.

Go to eBay, Amazon, Clickbank, etc. and compare the top products. You can find a similar product in many other affiliate networks, like JVzoo and promote something different, but at the same time similar to what people already are buying from someone else.

I hadn't thought about informational products before as I was so focused on physical products, this has given me something new to think about, thanks Would you recommend focusing informational products on evergreen niches or are there no real especially profitable niches with those?

Trouble is I don't feel like I've got many interests that can be that profitable (I'm mainly into PC building and upgrading etc) as they aren't really evergreen niches that people are always after.

That is a really good idea, that's a few people now that have suggested informational products as a good alternative to traditional physical product marketing. Research time methinks!

I had been intending to rank for buyer related keywords such as buy green coffee bean, best green coffee bean etc as you've suggested but my main concern was picking the wrong product to do this for and to end up focusing time and energy into a fruitless website that was targeting wrong.

It's no worries Ed! I've gained a lot of information to look into now about how to do things differently. Thanks to everyone who has posted so far, really appreciate all the advice you've given me!

personally I would recommend that you private label products such as the ones you mentioned (**** berry etc) rather than sell other peoples through affiliate marketing. Its a lot more work upfront but much much more rewarding.

You will be lucky to get 20% commission on a $30 sale selling supplements via affiliate marketing = $6 but if you private labelled the product and sold as your own branded product you will get 100% of your asking price.

Its much easier with your own branded product to jump into markets and undercut other sellers ans still make a nice profit. I know because I have done it and I'm doing it right now in the UK.

Would you rather not have 100% of a $30 sale or 20%? No Brainer!!

Whilst it is still possible to build sites that feature one product and then rank them in Google it's much harder than it used to be especially for a newcomer who doesn't know the ins and outs of affiliate marketing, conversions and SEO.

However even he talks about the limitations these types of sites have and the time and money that is now being spent on them.

If I remember correctly he recently said sites of these types can take up to 6 months to see any real progress (rankings etc) and until that point you're just really sitting around praying that Google likes your site and ranks you.

And remember there is NO guarantee you'll ever rank and even if you do Google can take it away from you at any time.

I think that it's much better to get into a wider niche where you can promote variety of products to your audience rather than just have one site that can only really promote 1 product and has no room for expansion.

These types of sites generally allow you to drive traffic from sources other than Google too such as forums, blogs, social media, video, email and so on.
