Am I using the Keyword Planner correctly?

I've been interested in creating an Amazon affiliate site for sometime now and I have just began researching a niche to target. I know broadly what I have to do and I intend on creating good websites with good content.

The only issue I'm having is using the keyword planner, almost all of the product keywords I search with come up with between 10 - 40 monthly searches each. I accepted that this may just be how it goes but then I tested with keywords such as 'iphone reviews' 'buy ipad air' 'smartphone reviews' etc... and I still get very low monthly searches with a few thousand each.

I cant believe that only 590 people searched for 'iphone reviews'. So I'm wondering if I'm using the planner correctly, am I missing something or is this common to find many low monthly search keywords.

I've abandoned quite a few product niches which has a good range of products, not much competition on the first page of google (apart from other affiliate sites) but I haven't pursued it because the keyword planner suggested that it it only got 20 searches a month.

So does this sound normal?

Thanks!

As far as I know, you may selected the wrong keyword, you may select iphone game reviews, iphone app reviews etc. those keywords are much more specific than the one you selected. According to the monthly search times, it is meaningless, the keywords you selected should be should be at least searched thousands of times per month.

One thing to consider when using the keyword planner is the related searches. When looking at the query you used above I see 1,900 searches. Looking at the keyword ideas a term like 'iPhone 5 reviews' gets almost triple the amount of searches. Dig into the keyword data a little more and see what related terms get more searches. Also, don't only consider one keyword. A number of different queries might add up to a significant amount of potential traffic.

I always think backwards from the masses apparently but it's been working.

If something has even as low as 90 searches a month and it's for a keyword ending in review with High competition I'm ranking for that before something general with thousands of searches.

Call me crazy but 90 people a month looking for a review of something they want to purchase (given that they're looking for reviews they've made the decision to buy) and being right at the top for it sounds like more of what I need (sales looking at my content) rather than a few thousand general searches for say just 'iphone' which can range from buyers to people comparing iphones to other brands and not necessarily BUYERS.

I have a keyword planner tutorial on my youtube channel if you'd like it let me know.

      Thanks for the input guys.

I should point out I'm in the UK so you will probably get a different result than ne if you are in the US.

Even so, considering millions are sold every year I would have thought 'iPhone 5 review' would have more than a thousand searches.

Anyway I won't argue with the figures and yes, I'll prbabky larget lower monthly search keywords and rank higher!

Start with the Amazon search bar.

When you start typing in an item to search for, it will give you a list of possible searches based on what people are searching for on Amazon. Write these down for several possible related items.

        Group them in logical groups.

Now head over to the keyword planner.

Use your logical groups as seed keywords. Throw out the obvious outliers that just don't make sense.

Go through the logical grouping exercise again. Now, instead of looking at the volume for an individual keyword, look at the volume for the group.

For your site, create multiple pieces of content and reviews based on each group and interconnect them in a sensible manner (i.e., one that, if a visitor follows the links, would lead them to a click to buy the product).

Repeat with the next group of keywords.

Here's a tip you won't see too often...

After you start getting some traffic, look at the keywords people are actually following to get to your site. Take those keywords and repeat the process above.
