What Makes An E-book Special

Hi,

I'm keen to start learning how to publish some information based products, I have some good knowledge in 2 industries with big followings but to be honest i am a little skeptical.

I dont get why there are hugely successful ebook marketers on the internet selling tens of thousands of dollars worth of the product a month for a book priced at $40 or much more! For example The Truth About Six Pack Abs ebook is reported to generate nearly 7 figures a month in revenue (see Tim Ferris' 4 hour work week blog for an interview with the author) When most of the same information could be found in a nice glossy hardcover book from amazon for about $10.

And now with Kindle you have ebooks that have been written by "endorsed experts" (aka celebrity trainers/chefs/business advisers with a PR machine behind them) selling the same information for $5-6.

Can an individual with a nice looking website who is a little bit savvy with internet marketing stand a chance of competing with a more expensive product?

Obviously you can and people do, you only have to look at the huge array of products on clickbank selling for >$50 to know people are shifting these products in big volumes.

But what in your opinion separates these products from an amazon kindle product a tenth of the price?

Thanks I hope for a few interesting comments :-)

Also.. if you have found any favorite threads on here on the ebook topic that really helped you it might be nice to start building a directory of them here

You are going to get lots of advice as to how to promote your E-Book on the internet. It will all be good advice. I urge you to think outside the internet box for promoting your E-book as well. Think of how you can be interviewed in the mass media talking about some aspect of your book and exposing it to perhaps millions of people you would never reach otherwise. Now that is the secret to getting sales when you are in a situation such as yours. OK, good luck, Edward Smith.

    Hi Tommy,

    Welcome to WF.

In answer to your question - yes, you can sell a product for a higher price.

I have a product that sells regularly for around $30, and had a product that sold for over $100 a go (which was a premium version of the $30 product with an added video course).

Could people go on Amazon and get the same information for $5-$6?

    Probably.

Did my products sell/do they continue to sell?

    Hell yes.

These 2 products haven't generated me 7 figures per month (or in their whole lifetime), but there again, I wholly doubt the claims of nearly 7 figures every month made by whoever you are referring to.

My products have done well over $30k+ over the course of the past couple of years.

    How did I do it?

    Simple(ish):

    1. I established myself as an expert on a forum directly related to my niche. That forum allows advertisers to advertise their services, through threads, and more importantly - signature links. (And no, my products have nothing to do with the IM niche).

When I say established, I use that term loosely. You see, I believe I am an expert in the niche I am in - because I have actually done what I teach through my eBooks/videos, and still do - I practice what I preach.

On that forum, I never sell my product. I help people for free, through forum posts. Helping people for free, sells my products.

    2. Social proof. Social proof for me, came through that very forum. I have a thread on there that advertises my product. People leave reviews = social proof.

People on that forum actually recommend my product to new members of the forum. Some of these people haven't even purchased my product. But as I said in number 1, establish yourself as an expert/authority in your subject area, help people, and then people see you as an expert and have no qualms in recommending a product you have.

    3. Affiliates and JV partners. Don't underestimate these. They have the power to put $$$'s in your bank account overnight. My one affiliate did just this, because he had a targeted list who trusts him, which leads me nicely onto number 4,

    4. Build a list from the start. I didn't do this. In fact, I did it ridiculously late. When I released my premium product, I realised I couldn't email previous buyers of my $30 eBook because I didn't have a list.

    5. Unique selling point. My product is really a niche within a niche. Focussing on one specific area.

    6. Value. Provide a lot of it. I provide free email support, free updates on products when they are updated, and tonnes of additional value that is relevant to my product.

Stop thinking of reasons why you shouldn't go ahead and do it, research thoroughly (look at what's already out there etc) and come up with the reasons why you should do it.

    Good luck :-)

This is because the sellers who describe the ebooks they are selling either flat out lie about what's in the ebook, or the description of what's in the ebook is almost all hype at the very least.

If you go to a bookstore, the description of the book is usually on the back of the book. Tells what the book is about. No hype, no lies, no muss, no fuss. So people don't get overly excited about them, but they do know what is going to be in the book.

Many IMers will give you garbage something like 'this ebook is worth $995 because it shows you how to make six figures in 3 weeks, but I'm going to let you have it today for $9.95'.

Total BS. If we use that logic, then a typical car mechanic book at Waldenbooks should sell for maybe a couple thousand dollars, cuz that's how much or more it could save you in car repairs.

So the quoted worth of most ebooks is really highly over exaggerated.

This is one of those questions that probably has no real good answer. The value of the book is what someone is willing to pay for it to get the information inside.

Part of the pricing of books on Amazon has to do with Amazon. They encourage you to price your book between 2.99 and 9.99 (that gets you the 70% royalty and any price above/below that range gets you a 33% royalty)

For many, there is prestige in having a book published on Amazon no matter what the price is. Chefs, coaches, consultants, etc can use the book to better position themselves as experts.

The Truth About Abs is not just an ebook - i believe it is books, workbooks, videos, audios, recipes, etc. I was an affiliate for that product like 4 years ago and it is still going strong. They deliver value or else I think they would be out of business by now.

At the end of the day, if you want to put your book on Amazon Kindle, the price is going to be artificially lower. But you (hopefully ) make up for that through the exposure they give you.

And as Allen (founder of Warrior Forum) would say: don't call it an ebook. the perceived value of an ebook is very low. Call it a report, a tutorial, a training...

Hope that helps in some way...

    Hi Tommy,

Being around for a couple of months now, I heard one successful marketer say: "It's not about what you sell, it's about HOW you sell!"

However, value matters a lot because it will make your readers like and trust you.

So, take a look at the different threads on the forum to learn about good marketing techniques and you'll be good to go.

    Hope this helps,
    Catherine

P.S. Don't forget to build your list in the process. Owning targeted traffic is how you'll make it happen for you.

      Thanks everyone for the answers.

Maybe this should be a seperate thread but seeing as I have your attention; would you advise promoting a product on clickbank. Obviously there are good and bad points to both. You have to give up a lot in commission but you are theoretically going to reach thousands of people you might otherwise never get your product in front of.

I'm currently building a product I am really excited about on a huge industry I have worked in for years. Have a 30,000 word ebook I have written giving info you can't get anywhere else, videos, engaging background story. Have a bit of capital behind me to put in to a decent looking sales page too.

But know nothing about Internet marketing (well as much as someone has from reading books for 4 or 5 months) so was thinking it would be best to partner up with affiliates that handle the promotional side of things

Like all have said, it's accomplished by building up your reputation in your niche.

Additionally, if a product creator sets the commissions at 100%, that's a HUGE incentive for affiliates to promote. The creator gets the list on their email where they then send the followups which ideally make them their money down the road.

I've been doing this now for 18 years so yep....works well.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks Barbling. The thing is.. the product i have produced (well nearly finished) is very good ( i know it sounds egotistical to say that, but I have been very involved in this industry and know there is very little out there like this) and wouldn't be prepared to sell that as a loss leader.

I suppose I will have to think up a lesser product to sell as a loss leader to get an email list. However i have poured all my knowledge and expertise into this product and not sure what other product I could sell without just copying information from what I have already covered

Thanks TraderFX. I know I have the valuable content. Just trying to work out how to tell the world about it in a way that doesnt come across as too "salesy". I personally hate getting "sold to" and everything feels like a con when I see 90% of internet marketers squeeze pages. (i think squeeze pages is the right term). And i know what I have is genuine and want to separate myself from the opportunists selling poor products.

Im thinking the best way would be to have it promoted through legitimate, respected authority sites in my area of expertise because the odds of me building an authority site to sell my product is like saying "i will build a Football stadium so I can hang some advertising on the side", not likely to happen.

I know i can teach a lot of people things they havent seen before so maybe I will release the first chapter or two for free and build it that way?

For that reason, you'll need to hire a good copywriter to write your copy for you; someone who knows your product and the psychological make-up/demographics behind your intended target audience.

OR, you could save money (at the expense of time), and learn how to write the sales page, etc, yourself.

What it really boils down to is making sure your sales page is written with BENEFITS that your visitors can relate to. Not features, but benefits. Written from your prospects' perspective of: "what's in it for me?"

Not to mention a compelling headline, good call-to-action, guarantee, etc; those will all come into play to determine how "special" your eBook is.

And as others are saying here, it is 100% based on your marketing strategy and efforts.
        ..

...you can have a TERRIBLE product and make a killing, with the right marketing. Obviously, you can have THE best product in the world, but make no money at all because no one knows about it, or it's not presented (sold) correctly (wrong demographics; wrong offer; no hungry buyers in said niche, etc.)

I'd suggest giving a chapter or two away as your loss leader, to collect contact info to market to later; whether it's the "release" of the full eBook, related affiliate products, etc.

Also, think of a bonus that you can offer purchasers of the book, as a "gift" for making a purchase. Of course, place a $ value on that freebie, so they don't perceive the value as any less since it's free. Make the "bonus" so good, that it can stand on its on as a paid product--your customers will love it!

Another thing you can add to the list is some kind of ongoing support, as well as updates, as mentioned by someone else. For instance, for an eBook I sell regarding Virus Removal. Purchasers
of the manual are given incentives from the day they purchased, to infinity (4-years and counting).

Here's what I offer to increase "value":
*Unlimited email tech-support (0-3 hours response time guarantee)
*Updates of the eBook when new versions are released (containing new chapters & current info)
*Bonus eBook that shows how to tune-up their PC for a 35% increase in speed and performance.
*Bonus tutorials, videos, emails as they are released
        ...and more.

        ---

        Oh, here's another:
have a good amount of helpful content available on your site, related to your product. For instance, having lots of helpful, related articles help because they show your visitors that you know "your stuff" (an 'expert'), without you having to tell them (selling).

If your content is good enough--factual and helpful--they will be more inclined to buy your product AND think of you as the person to call for such info in the future ('authority' status).

And many will pass on the word (passive income).

        Hope that helps!

Those are just some ideas that work for me. Hope that helps!

You have to remember Tommy that, it's not the best products (digital or psychical) that sell the most, but the best MARKETED products that do the best.

This ABS ebook for example probably has been marketed heavily by the publisher, dominates the main keyword phrases on Google for that niche and has tons of good affiliates promoting the product.

If you want a piece of the pie in your chosen field then, you have to find out what to do with regards to promotion and DO IT. This should lead to TARGETED people with a card in their hand ready to BUY what you have on offer.

    Jarvis,

Thanks very much. That's really great advice. I'm planning on hiring some people but a copywriter wasn't something I considered.

I was also planning on giving away the opening chapter for free.

    Really good suggestions though. Thanks
