Good average open rate for a list?

I have a list of 22 daily emails. I know what a good optin rate is but was curious to know a good open rate.

I assume these are for a free opt-in list? I have a 21 day series, freebie list, open rates vary from 2% to 8% and then average around 5% through the entire series.

I keep tweaking the lower open-rate subject lines to get them higher and then also look at the click through rates and test calls to actions in them also to get higher.

      Yikes!

What kind of traffic are you sending through your opt-in that's getting such lower numbers?

To edlanglais: There's a lot of variables that remain unknown about your list so proving an accurate rate would be impossible.

But a good average to shoot for is around 20-30%.

You might expect a little lower if you're in the IM niche.

This is from a freebie seeker funnel. I think that's right in line with average.

Buyer's email list is obviously much higher but you can't compare the two.

What do you get for open rates after 10-15 emails to a freebie list? I think 5% is still pretty good after 15 straight days. After 3 weeks if I can't move them a to buyers list they are basically done.

I guess everyone would give a different number. For some email marketers, 5% is a good open rate, for some others 10% is good.

My definition of a good open rate is 40%. That's what I am targeting for in the long term. I did around and above that with some of my emails but my average is not that yet. Others might think differently on this but in my opinion, 1 person out of 20 or 1 person out of 10 opening your emails is not a good rate. That pretty much means that you don't have a good connection with your list and the majority of them don't care about your emails.

Having said that, I also know that open rates may differ in long-term connection based lists and lists that are build solely for promoting stuff and sent frequent emails.

My humble advice would be without worrying about a good average open rate, you should focus on building a better connection with your list and think long term.

Thanks to all THHE answers. It depends on the email but my emails can average anywhere between 10 to 20. And yes I'm in the IM niche.

Whatever your open rate is, be sure to clean your list regularly.

Way back when, I had built a list of over 22 thousand and felt very good about myself except that open rates were hovering around 8%.

I finally realized that many of the addresses on my list hadn't opened an email in AGES and that others were bouncing.

Getting rid of this deadwood on a regular basis will not only boost your open rate but will keep you on the good side of the ISPs that have to deal with all those unopened and bad emails.

Believe it or not, I'm in a competitive niche. And, my normal open rate is around 94%. And, my unique open rate is around 65%. Now, I know, if I open my own emails then it can add in these ratios but I open my email just once.

I'm not a technical type of person, and my mind doesn't work in things like inbound linking or outbound linking, whatever we say, I don't know. I don't even know what to say, normal open rate or average open rate? I seriously don't know, and I'm not interested in it too. I just told you what I see in the statistics.

And, I don't send emails daily, I send once in a week. My every content is filled with quality and proper research; And, I don't research from online, which is already available to others too. I buy and read books, and then research on the topic; read about surveys and facts too. It's like, in my every content, I try to do a PhD. I just want to invent something new.

I don't baffle myself in too many things. I just create one special thing in one day. For example: Before sending an email to my list, I spend whole day in creating that email. I try my best to inject the most valuable information in it which they can't find anywhere else.

And, English is not my first language; I believe, my list knows about this too. But, they don't care. In fact, they support me, and I often get emails from them in which they praise my work and info.

As I've said earlier, I'm a simple guy, I just focus on providing immense value, and I think, it's working.

the only "good" open rate is with a high click through rate.

I think folks tend to worry too much about open rates. CTR as stated above is much more important.

At the end of the day, don't let these things worry you. The only stat that is important, at least in my opinion, is ROI.
