The problem with a sniper site is that it focuses on one product. When the product being promoted goes out of stock, the site becomes useless.

A sniper site is a site that targets a specific product, typically using an exact-match domain to rank for the target product.

It also targets longtail keywords specific to the solo product. Includes targetef social media channels too.

So, it would be like having CanonX1iRebelCamera.com and then on that site selling the exact camera?

Hiya!, I'd like to chip in on this..., a few years ago they were really popular (just do a google search on "this is my true story of" -with quotes-) and you'll find many, (and they still can be profitable, but with more work and on hands experience with the product), anyway wolfmmiii explained it best, I was semi comfortable with the idea as long as at least a personal review was made, minimum a book review, or if an amazon product a blog. Also I don't think getting a domain with a trademarked brand would be a good idea...

Anyway I think that has nothing to do with traffic, nowadays it's harder to rank 3-5 page sites (according to the keyword) though it can be done.

Since Google wants to see much more quality unique content, just concentrating on one 'content thin' product site, won't cut it anymore.

I think now you really have to expand out and focus on turning a one product site approach into a site that demonstrate more authority on the topic

If you take the Canon camera example, I would develop a site that covered all the Cannon camera models.

Or you could just do say...... all the Canon SLR models.....or all the Cannon Video cam models.

It all depends on the keywords and niches

jump into any popular niche and you don't have a chance unless you can find keywords not being targeted by the competition

    every niche is different

I am finding niches with less than 300 words on the whole page including everything

so sites with small amounts of pages and text still work but again not every niche is the same and its ranking factors have everything to do with this with the latest changes with Google

Don't believe one shoe fits all you need to look at the competition all the time, you will find many niches don't fit what everyone is telling you to do

you have to evaluate everything on a one on one basis

Once I started doing this the whole ranking issue changes compared what you hear people telling you what to do

And I can prove it if anyone has interest in knowing

one page sites will rank easily if the results are very low. example: google your keyword with quotes and see what the results are. under 15k...should rank easy....i do not care what anyone says.....it still ranks...just have good content

    @tristatemedia....

The number of results has nothing to do with ranking or competition. To illustrate my point, I'll ask you a rhetorical question:

    The Assumption:

My keyword is "blue widgets with yellow polka dots". When I search that keyword, Google returns just 50 results. 35 of them are PR9 domains with 100K backlinks to each.

    The Question:

Is my single-page PR0 sniper site going to rank on the first page?

Targeting social media with an EMD or sniper site is probably an awful idea. The reason you would target social media is to get shares, likes, and traffic. Most people aren't going to share Dellx5400laptopreviews.org.

They would, however, be more inclined to share HowardComputing.com if it had good (or interesting) content.
