Set up a website, now what?

I have set up a internet networking website using ning services.

The IM Network

Currently I have about 1335 members and its growing kind of slow. I have tried "pay to sign up", google adwords ( expensive ) Yahoo ( not responsive traffic ), linkreferral ( monthly fee )...

Anyone has any good ideas that can help me promote my website and increase the membership? Or maybe is there any wrong with the website content??

I'll appreciate any comments and ideas!

Maybe if you give us a little more info on how you applied these methods, we may be able to help you...

They are all ideas that work, maybe they weren't implemented correctly

I have look through with my PPC. I think I have made a big mistake. My Ads titles are " free advertising, post free Ads etc. I have change the title to " Internet Marketing forum " Sound logical but not very attractive.

The best way to get people to your site is to be apart of the niche community. That means visiting forums like this one and participating.

If people begin to view you as an authority then you are more likely to have them move some conversation over to your site. But you have to make your site different enough so that people will want to make the move over.

Why don't you take some time to let us know about why your site is different from other marketing communities.

yes forum marketing does work and can be powerful and you can also use socail networks to drive traffic. Submit your site to socialMarker and if you want to spend money on advertising go to quantcast and technorati find a blog or heavy traffic website that is in the same niche as you and contact them about advertising.

Contact the owner of the site and see what their pricing is for advertising, you want to make sure that you are above the fold(before you have to scroll down). Quantcast will give you most this info and then research the sites you pick to see how much traffic they get a moth using alexa.

We should discuss the balancing act of participating on forums without being considered spammers. In my experience it depends as much on the folks on any given forum as it does our approach. It took a couple of bannings before I got the point!

I consider my site a valuable resource for those on the relevant forums and tend to link back to it when I have a comment to add to an existing thread about a product, for instance. The trick is not to overdo it, and perhaps rely on the sig to do its thing on its own if people appreciate your input.

On a quick look I would say:
          a) Get a native English speaker to proofread your text. You're not really doing yourself a favour by having a forum in English with grammar/spelling errors. (I don't mean to sound rude - it does just need reading through and correcting.)
          b) The site is muddly. Is it a forum I'm meant to join or do you really want me to click on an advert and leave? If you want me to join the forum - take away all the advertising, simplify the page and tell me what the forum is about and why I should join.

Actually those Ads are part of the affiliate program for advertising. I thought it could allow my member to make some money and at the same time get some traffic. Looks like I have to remove some ads.

In todays internet marketing scenario social bookmarking, blog submissions and participating in forums definitely gives a great boost to the traffic as well as better conversions as these traffic would be coming from niche areas of other sites !

    hey Gerald,

    create an affiliate program.
For example, 1$ for every referral or something.

Also start a blog on that subject.
