What The X-Factor Can Teach You About Marketing

These shows demonstrate every time they are on TV
(thanks to good marketing by the way)
how much people love a good story.

The formula is simple.

"Rags to riches."

"Bad boy takes a turn to the good side gets a lucky break".

The most recent I saw:

"Good girl gone bad, now on the road to recovery".

I mean these are all great and get people invested every time
in that person and root for them to do well.

Also one of the strongest triggers when considering if we should
buy or not buy is our emotional state towards
A) The product
B) The person selling the product

Just thought I would point it out as something to keep in mind
as marketers.

What ways can you think of using this method in your marketing?

What's unfortunate is that many of the stories are very deceiving and over-dramatized.

Well, the technique is a successful trigger because inherently many people root for the underdog. And many of us can relate to challenges as we've faced them. But as noted by the previous post, when these stories are deceiving one is let down.

Stephen, great point! Everybody loves a good story. I tell my story on my blog. Being open, transparent, and willing to share your wins and losses sets up a neat story that most people dig.

The whole show is just a big marketing campaign for the song that the winner releases when the show is over. So much hype is created, they can make billions of albums, interviews, concerts, that kind of thing. They are creating a celebrity.

Sometimes i feel sorry for the participants as they are pretty much just selling themselves as tools to massive organisations who use them as advertising. And I wouldn't be suprised if the directors know who is going to win before the competition even starts.

  • I'm not a fan of these shows because they sometimes tend to over-dramatize things. And in terms of marketing, they tend to overuse a formula to death. I'm not saying it's not entertaining or addictive but overall, people do get tired of the same old antics.
