How you leave a job says more about you than about the job or the boss.

You can give notice, do the work well up to the last day you are there. You'll then be free of the job and known as "XXXX who used to work here". You can ask for a recommendation later if you need to find another job.

Or throw a tantrum, tell the boss how stupid he is and how the job sucks and stomp out. You'll be free of the job and be known as "that idiot". Burning bridges for a few minutes self gratification is silly to me.

I agree entirely, Kay and with the rest who have echoed this.

I gave a "nice" letter to my bosses and almost 20 years down the line (not solely in IM then or now!) I still get work and referrals from them!

Pays to be careful - not petty.

I quit my job in 2002 to work on my Internet Marketing business full-time. That felt great! I really hated that corporate job, so I was really excited to give my boss my resignation letter.

Even though deep inside I did want to tell the boss to "kiss my ***", I handled it professionally. I just wrote a nice letter telling them I'm resigning in 2 weeks. I then showed up for those last 2 weeks doing a great job.

It's always best not to burn the bridges and leave on the good terms.

I also agree that it's best not to burn bridges.

Even if you hate your job is probably best to leave on good terms.

In the moment it may feel good to say some nasty things, but sometimes these actions have repercussions down the road.

Although it may be nice to just walk out, why would anyone want to burn a bridge with a former employer / boss? The contacts you created at work can also help your new business as your former boss or coworkers can help bring more business to you by telling others about your business venture. I always look at each job situation as a chance to network and build new business ventures..

I think I was lucky. It was my boss who was very supportive and kept asking how things were going and eventually suggested that I went full time because I would make more online :-)

I'm assured it wasn't a tactful way to fire me ;-)

what I did was ( i worked in a cinema)

I went up to my boss in the hallway and I said that i don't wish to work here since I feel that it is stopping me to accomplish my life ling dream and that I have decided to work in an alternate type of business that is more suited to my needs and gives me the space that i need.

2 weeks later after I quit they called me if I can come to work, they taught that I wouldn't make it and that I'll come back (I was always complimented on my work there), but I didn't... but the good thing is that i left on good terms with them... now I have found another part time job that i managed to get since i had my last job as a reference...

Although I didn't make it trough yet I'm still not giving up on my dream...

I know you're looking for something funny, but I have to add to the chorus of those who said to be respectful, put in your two week's notice and not burn bridges.

(The you below refers to the general you and not the OP)...

For one, as Kay said, it's just silly to tell someone to "shove it" or whatever (especially when you chose to work there in the first place -- the boss didn't have to hire you, and you didn't have to stay).

Two, you may want to offer IM services to this person in the future -- or to people he/she knows. So it's a good idea to leave that door open.

Three, put yourself in the boss' shoes (because now YOU are the boss of your own company). Think about how you'd like to be treated when someone quits. Then extend that same courtesy to your current boss.

I was in outside sales and my boss called me up with an issue and started cursing at me. I told him no one talks to me like that and I didn't even need this job. He smirked and said "oh, you don't need this job?"

I said that is right, I quit! Hey thought I was joking. I guess the joke was on him :-)

PS- I actually needed the job at the time. My wife had epilepsy and I could not get her on a private policy. That was why I was still working. But, by the grace of God my wife has been healed of the epilepsy and all is great!

I don't totally agree with the mantra about "not burning bridges."

The biggest motivator for being my own boss is NOT having to work with people I don't like. So I have no problem with burning bridges with people who aren't nice, professional, or just downright mean. Regardless of repercussions. You just can't put a price on that kind of satisfaction!

This is the golden rule, "Do unto others, as they do unto you." :p

I've been lucky enough to have a boss that's also one of the coolest people I know. So I'll probably end up buying him a bottle of scotch and/or lunch when it's my time to leave my J-O-B.

But if your boss is a jerk, feel free to use this template:
