How to make money from forums??

The obvious advice is to sell advertising in related but non-competing niches like domain name hosting, web site building software, online business business creation, etc, etc. You will need to get a lot more traffic than you currently have to employ this model profitably.

The second obvious advise is to place related affiliate offers on your site. Again, this is going to take some more consistent traffic in order to make many sales.

My preferred way to monetize such a forum would be to sell your own products and services in the niche. Figure out what you can offer to folks who are targeted for your forum. Create info products that would appeal to them.

In addition, this is an obvious site to promote web site building services, SEO services, graphic design, article writing, and anything else related to online business execution.

You have a forum on domain names. This is perfect for using affiliate links of various domain name registrars. Another idea would be to create an ebook on buying/selling domains if you have some expertise in this area.

tried it with Godaddy and Hostgator.

Maybe the traffic is not enough or the links are not in the best position. I wouldn't give up on this idea as it is the most obvious monetization method for your website.

Create an account on Commission Junction, Pepperjam Network, Affiliate Window and apply to become an affiliate of companies like GoDaddy, HostGator, Inmotion Hosting, etc. Related ads are key. You can also go the Google Adsense route and just get paid off of clicks.

Here's what I did a while ago: I made two email lists in my auto-responder. In one, I collected the e-mail address of unregistered users via a modal window. Then I simply advertised related products and invited them to see new related threads that they might be interested in (hopefully getting them to sign up). When they signed up I added them to my members list where I sent more offers and other types of news.

Worked incredibly well, till I sold the site for a great profit.

Yes, I'd play around with the positioning of the ads because it sounds like domain registrars and hosting ads is the best way to go in your case...

Try incorporating amazon and ebay (affilliate) products or go for CPC networks like adsense. Putting a trade / premium section at your forums would be nicer and also seo your forum properly and provide your users a section where they can market their own business for a lower price. I have done this all with 80% success ratio

Focus on the core strengths of your forum
What makes you different from other forums
What topics does your forum focus on, then these would be the areas to identify and sale to advertisers.
How much traffic do you get a month? this would be one question everyone will ask you
