This is my niche, what should I do?

Okay so I have been interested in IM for quite a while now.

My main area of expertise is playing the saxophone. I have created an online saxophone teaching website which is one of my ongoing projects.

However I am struggling for ideas in how to make this niche profitable. I don't have that much knowledge in other subjects to be confident in starting businesses around them.

So my main question is, what would you do if you were in my situation and what kind of website would you create around this niche?

Saxophone reviews? that's my only idea at the moment (potential big affiliate commissions)

Edit: Just to make it clear, I already have a paid membership website which teaches people how to play the saxophone. I am looking for another project

It is a definitely interesting niche and narrow enough to attract people to your site.

I would not bother so much about seo. If I were you, I would populate a website with interesting, useful, practical posts, articles on how to use an instrument, specifics of it and so on... This kind of posts would be free.

As far as business goes, I would create an online video course (classes) if it is possible of course, and sell membership to those videos. Some music instrument related websites have done so and I am sure they have a good business.

You should engage in SM too, like Facebook for example.

The most important thing is that you enjoy it - from your passion comes quality, from quality comes money.

One idea is you could make your saxophone teaching website into a membership site.
Focus on adding helpful content for people who want to learn the saxophone - this could be educational videos, saxophone music audios, even interviews with other saxophone players etc.

1 - build an email list of people who are interested in learning to play saxophones, you might find potential subscribers in music forums and social media websites.

2 - Then develop a friendly helpful reputation with your email subscribers by posting on your own saxophone blog. Tell your email subscribers that you have posted something on your blog where they can comment.

3 - Then tell your email subscribers about your saxophone membership website - or you could even send a survey to your email list and ask them exactly what content they would like in a saxophone membership site. That way you will be building a saxophone membership site based on content you know your email list wants.

    Hope this helps you

Thanks to both of you. My saxophone teaching website is actually a paid membership site. It has a couple of free resources too to make people sign up to my email list.

Do you think I should start a new website with useful information or try to incorporate something into my existing website? Not quite sure how that would work in terms of layout though

Maybe you should send out a survey to your email list asking them exactly what type of saxophone content they are looking for. Then once you have the results for this email survey of what your list wants - you will have a clearer idea if you should add this new content to your existing site or a new site.

The advice listed above is your best starting point.

I could give you a list of ideas like others in this thread. But the best way to know what works is to ask your target market. Not us. And you do that with a survey. The more you ask (up to a point) the more accurate picture you'll get.

You need to know( not guess, speculate or opinionize) what urgent problems are they experiencing (the more painful, frustrating or stressful the better .. for you).

Next: Your mission (should you decide to accept it) is to find the untapped, under-served or unmet need (problem) of "sax and wanta be sax players" and solve it with a product or service. Just ask them. Survey them, interview them, hang out in sax players and even musicians forums, etc.

Listen for problems, frustrations, irritations they have when it comes to "anything" saxophone. That's your doorway to dollars if you can solve it. Sometimes it's the simple slap-your-forehead obvious solutions. But first the key is to know the problem.

Your landing page looks amazing. I just think the YouTube video is a bit too dark.

Isn't there a forum for Saxophone learners where you could provide help to newbies and put a link in the signature?

Thanks very much. I agree with the darkness issue, I haven't been able to invest in better equipment yet. And yes I have so far achieved 1 sale through helping members on saxophone forums. It's not much but it is definitely a start

Try to become an affiliate of a musical instrument dealer, where you can advertise saxophones and accessories for sale on your own site or get a commission on deals you referred. Same thing with records, music collections, books and memorabilia featuring famous sax players.

Quite a unique Niche. You need to advertise in the correct communities, such as music forum.

May I ask is the problem your membership is not making enough money? or is it you do not have enogh members?
Not enough money - create premium courses on different aspects eg for drums
Online Drum Lessons | Step-By-Step Drum Courses

Not enough sax players - consider providing some free lessons on Youtube to drive people to become members.

Hope my two penniy worth helps

Not enough members to make any money. Either my promotion is all wrong or my course just isn't very good. I'll try doing more on youtube when I finish my exams

It is a narrow niche, which has got it's own pros and cons. Your competition is likely to be lower than say make money online or weight loss, but so is your potential customer base. I would suggest you set up accounts in Facebook, Twitter and Google+ and try and target musicians, specifically those interested in the saxophone. On Google+ use Google hangouts to connect with people and share articles and discuss relevant news items with like minded people. Pinterest is also a very good way to connect with people in small niches.

Saw your video on your blog. Nice licks on that alto. Yep, I'm another one from the Wayne Shorter gen.

Lots of Warriors have given you tips that will work if you set your own thoughts aside for a bit and apply one or two of them.

As a IM enthusiast, I would like to offer you two points.

First is a ditto of what your heard from Shaneman (sounds like a tenor player, to me) in part of his third point, e.g. - or you could even send a survey to your email list and ask them exactly what content they would like in a saxophone membership site.

Second is the fact that you are in a very ideal set of circumstances because you have what is termed in IM; a micro niche. Unfortunately, you have not yet learned how to do what you are fishing for here in the WF and that is:

Brand Yourself as an Authority (in your micro niche)

It's past midnight here in Japan so if you want to know how to go about effectively branding yourself as an authority in your micro niche, PM me and I will reply to you when I get back from getting in some seeds in my massive organic farm.

BTW, nothing for sale here, just willing to help another reeder (you get the pun) to move ahead with their online business.

it seems like way to small of a niche. I see some other problems with it

No other advertisers indicate that this niche isn't spending money. I personally wouldn't waste time with it.

Seems like nothing but time waster.

You can market and sell online, without know anything about a niche or market if you now how to market properly.

That is one of the biggest things fake gurus teach is that yo have to be an expert on every topice to be a good marketer which just isn't true.

Personally, I'd try selling the site to a niche marketer, get some money for your effort and let someone else deal with it

Not to burst your bubble, but I do not think that you have much to build another site on. If I were you, I'd use all good ideas on the existing page and make it even better.

How prominent are you on youtube and other video sites? That should get you more sales.

Also why not offer tablature creation services if you have good traffic?

I interviewed a guy recently that has a membership site with piano lessons. He does very well. He started on youtube. He would do how to play __________ on the piano as his keyword and do free tutorials on it. He has tons of videos on youtube and this is how he gets traffic to his membership site.

There are affiliate programs out there that sale musical instruments and this could supplement your income.

Adding content or blog posts can help you get organic traffic to your site.

What specific songs are people trying to learn?

Do they want to play Springsteen like Clarence Clemens?

Do keyword research to determine or at least get an idea. Try youtube research, I haven't used it in a long time but I assume it is fairly accurate.

Once you have an idea of some specific songs, record yourself playing along or just the sax parts and upload them to youtube. Put a link to your site at the very top of the description so it shows without "showing more." Put a big read arrow on the last 10 seconds of your vids pointing to your link with a "discover more now" or similar CTA.

This will get you traffic, if you are good. (:
