How bad is fax spam now?

I actually haven't had a fax machine for a while, but I have reached a point where I need this now, so I signed up for one of those email to fax services. I figured since I am thinking about it, maybe I could still use the fax machine to make a little money too. How problematic is it to send an advertisement to a local business via fax? And is fax spam a big issue these days?

Not as bad as it used to be since it's now illegal...

Not bad at all, actually.

And, in Washington State (where I'm at for the moment) an individual can sue spammers. With emails, it's easier for spammers to hide where they're coming from, but with a phone number? Not so much.

Wow, never new fax spam existed. I mean it is not exactly free to send faxes like emails.

Fax spam is not worth it...at all. I have heard of some stories of small businesses that got in trouble with it.

Still, there are creative ways to build up a fax marketing business. It just takes creativity and some initial groundwork.

I do know of one business owner who would fax a one page breakdown of various restaurants and their lunch specials. His fax list of businesses is in the thousands and he got the ok from every single business to fax to them.

How did he do it? He hired some people to hit the large office buildings and pass out a flier to various businesses. The flier offered businesses a once a week fax that had 12 restaurants with their lunch specials and discounts....

The restaurants were happy because they could track the effectiveness of the fax campaigns since the businesses had to cut out or bring a copy of the fax coupon.

The flier also promoted a free weekly lunch drawing to all of the businesses who subscribed to the fax. All they had to do do was fax back their weekly entry on the fax itself. Now, he had a very receptive customer base who couldn't wait to get his fax every week!

He signed up 12 different restaurants in 4 different metropolitan areas, charging each restaurant $50-$100/week to be on the fax service. Very clever business model!

Thanks for the insight. Now that you mention it, I do remember it being illegal. I was just curious if it was something I could do on a limited basis, but I don't think will try now, and I actually have better things to do with my time anyway.
