I am about to build some sites sites on a VPS. a dozen niche sites, white hat, some will be affiliate, some adsense. one thing I am wondering . does google mark against sites on one vps? do i have to use proxies or something? I have come across people mentioning proxies, but dont know how they are used.

I don't think you will have any issues with Google. No need to use proxies.
If that's true then hosting companies should not offer shared hosting.
Same things goes for VPS. You are just renting a space on a server with couple of other people.

There are literally millions of sites using shared servers (and therefore the same IP address) from various hosting providers all over the world.

Trust me - having a handful of sites on one server is not going to make any difference to Google; unless you're using a specific IP address which has been flagged by them as a "bad neighbourhood" for whatever reason, there's no way they can judge sites based on which server it's on.

I agree with this guy. I've been managing and hosting websites for 12 years now, and I have never heard of being penalized for running a "private server", with many sites as some others have posted.

Shared hosting is an extremely common thing. When server rack space was very expensive it was almost ubiquitous to have several virtual hosts on one IP. Now, since VPS is so cheap it's slowly becoming less common, but there is surely no penalty for having more than one site on an IP address.

proxies would work better, else there may be a reputation problem as all the sites will point to a single IP.

moreover the case is different between reputed shared hosting and VPS.

just assess, else split it up between 2-3 VPS or shared hosts.
