Encouraging People To Join Your List

Often times when building an email list we giveaway something for free such as an ebook or video for example.

As we have to give people a reason of why they should join our list.

I was wondering - What reasons do you present to your potential subscribers to motivate them of why they should join your list?

Do you do something that is different or unique that is maybe a little unusual but still ethical to encourage people to join your list - if yes what do you do?

    Give them something useful that they will find great value from. This could be an ebook or WSO that you previously sold for $39, or it can be insights that will greatly help them.

    Stay away from PLR as your main giveaway because this right off the bat shows that you are not original and unique with your content. And yes, people can tell right away if it's your content or if it's PLR

    I give them a relevant bonus that helps them solve their current issues.

    I also create customer care followups with products and encourage folks to opt in to that as well.

    Anything that delivers value/makes people smile.....

      That is a good idea - To be able to say to people that this product that is being given away for free was once a paid WSO, this would make it look more valuable in the eyes of the potential subscriber.

      I agree - it is important to build a buyers list too.

    Agreed with Listhoven that PLR as the main giveaway is not the best strategy and that providing your own content adds to the overall value and future sales.

    It's common now to see long, long lists of bonuses, much of which appear to be PLR and sometimes not of great relevance to the main product. I wonder if anyone has any split test results that they would be prepared to share between a long list of bonuses on a sales page v one or two high quality, relevant bonuses of the type suggested by Listhoven?

    Also - to Shaneman - did you have any novel ideas in mind when you asked the question?

      I am interested in methods that some Warriors may use to build their lists using different, unique or unusual methods that a lot of us have never really thought of before, but still ethical.

      I have heard of the idea of encouraging people to join a list to have a chance of winning a valuable prize that is related to the niche - what are your thoughts on this?

        I think the idea of a prize is a good one. I suppose the effectiveness is going to be determined by how valuable the prize is considered to be - my guess is that the prize would have to have a value perceived to be worth many times more than a typical "gift" bonus to attract interest and conversions.

        On the Quick Start Challenge, a mentoring prize was given in the first week valued at a few thousand dollars - it created a lot of interest and a bit of a "buzz". This was amongst people that had already signed up though, so I have no direct experience of how well it would convert new prospects and whether it would perform better or worse than "traditional" bonuses (the good quality ones that Listhoven was talking about above).

        I guess the way forward would be to try it in one of your sales funnels and split test it against good quality bonuses. I for one would be interested to know your results with it . . .

        Maybe others here have already tried it and can share the results of how effective it's been.

    I found that not giving away a freebie got me a helluva lot more people on board...

    To go with having a list that had many more buyers

      This works great if you want to build a list of people interested in winning prizes. Not so much for long term returns, unless you get some kind of thrill out of large autoresponder service bills.

      I offer good, valuable content which leads back to my sites, offer an incentive (like a report or short ebook) that addresses one small aspect of my topic, and promise more value for opt-ins than I give to the general public.

      Then again, I'm kind of an odd duck in this space. I'm not trying to build the biggest list. I'm trying to build a tribe (a la Seth Godin). I don't want people on my lists because of my freebie or a chance to win a prize. I want them on my list because they want more of me.

            If you bribe prospects with free incentives just to get them to join your list, you may actually be thwarting subsequent marketing campaigns. Subscribers will tend to expect more freebies and bonuses for purchases, and this mindset can distort expectations as well as the real value of the offer being promoted.

            I have found it to be very effective to offer (or better yet - recommend) a nominally priced product as a sample or partial solution to a common problem within a niche. In my marketing model, buyers (and only buyers) are invited to subscribe for product updates, niche-relevant information, reports, resources, etc.

            Admittedly, this approach results in much smaller lists, but it quickly qualifies leads and dramatically improves subscriber activity metrics and conversions. Rather than allowing subscribers to see me as a "marketer" trying to make sales, I try to position myself as a consultant or concierge - above the competing hordes of product peddlers.

            An excellent book I have often recommended here on the Forum regarding this topic is "Brand Against the Machine: How to Build Your Brand, Cut Through the Marketing Noise, and Stand Out from the Competition", by John Michael Morgan. (Available on Amazon)

              I use a similar method and honestly I'd rather have a list of 200 buyers than a list of 1000 freebie seekers.

      If you do not give away a freebie, what is the reason that you give people why they should join your list?
      Do you mean that you get people on to your list as soon as they buy something from you?

    Are you experienced with anything related to internet marketing, for example, I have a lot of experience doing local seo for offline business website, I can offer a free review of site, answer few questions by email for free, offer a free 15 minute consultation via Skype.

    In your case, just think about anything that you have experience with, maybe you know how to write articles or ebooks, or maybe you know how to place effective paid ads on facebook, what I am suggesting find something that you personally can offer to sweeten the deal for them to buy from you and not someone else...

    Depending on what type of info product you are selling, if it is lets say a product to the newbie market make money online niche, something you know how to do already would be and idea that they would be interested in learning more about ...;>)

    I offer them help because I hate to sell. The stuff I give is usually "unconventional" and well thought out - not something that would make ME money, but the other way around. Yes, they should feel guilty for not having to pay for it! It takes time and a lot of efforts, but the CTR and ROI make me happy.

    How about offering a survey? like "what free gift would help you most?" They have to give over their email to take the survey. You can give them a limited choice of say three items and provide the most popular one.

    This can add a bit of interaction to your list and shows you to be responsive. Also, people who bother take the survey are at least showing themselves to be action takers (rather than clicking the "get your free report here" button.

      Nowadays, I look at some things differently.

      For instance, you want to motivate someone to join your list.

      I don't...

      I would rather they ask me to join my list. I want it to be their idea. I want them to want me.

      If you focus on adding value to their lives, they will want too join your lists, read your emails and look at your offers.

      Deep down, they know you wouldn't be sending them anything that won't help them.

      That should be our goal.

        Thanks for sharing - a short email course spread out over a few days would be helpful and a nice way for new subscribers to get to know, like and trust us.

        Offering potential subscribers a sample of a product sounds interesting - then whey they are on our list we can let them know about the complete product for sale that they just received a sample of.

        That book you mentioned sounds interesting too - I must take a look at it.

        I like that - people should feel guilty for not having to pay for it, that is how good our help or free content should be.

        A survey sounds like a great idea and giving people the option to choose what free gift they like best and people could even sign up for the survey. Interesting.

    Joining forums like this Warrior Forum, interact with members by introducing yourself, ask questions, providing helpful tips and leave your squeeze page and blog link in your signature.

    Also join Facebook groups and do the same thing. Add them as friends, create your own group and invite them in.


    You can also Google for other blogs related to your niche and do blog commenting frequently with again relevant comments and valuable tips.

    Over time, when you build relationship with other bloggers, you can also request whether you can do guest post on their blogs.

    follow A.I.D.A. (Attention. Interest. Desire. Action) when crafting the sales message for your squeeze page.
    1. You introduce a problem
    2. Introduce a solution to the problem
    3. Introduce your report as the solution
