I sometimes wonder what is considered a page.

When I'm writing, the number of pages depends on the text size that I use. I've looked at some pdf books that I have and many of them seem to be size 16, so that's what I prefer to use, although I personally prefer 12.

When I look at physical books that I have, the number of words per page is about 400 or so.

Kindle books, well, the number of pages depends on what text size you set it at. I set it at the smallest size and it seems to be on average about 200 to 250 words per page.

So when I think about how many pages my book is going to have, I really don't know. It stands to be 30-40 pages, but that's based on size 12 text in Libreoffice.

How do you figure out what a page is?

When it comes to Kindle, or any other device displaying text, there is no regular page as such, for the reasons you've already mentioned. The end user has total control of the font size, so the number of words per page will vary quite a bit from one user to another, for the same document.

It's probably best to think in terms of words per book, or words per publication.

So when you buy a kindle book and it says it has x number of pages, what does that mean?

I don't figure it out. It is information I do not need. If the content is good, who cares.

I believe that refers to the number of pages of the printed version.

Why should you be worried about fonts and word count and page size...etc.? Its the info that people pay for not how much space it takes. If you are marketing your book, go for the number that sounds biggest (remember how they speak of number in the automobile sector in mm rather than inches?) on a widely used platform.
