How much do you charge?

I have been building websites for myself and for marketing related material for many years, but recently I was contacted by a local business and they are looking for a website. I can certainly build one for them but I have no idea how much to charge.

I will be building this site from scratch and estimate 20/hrs into design.
I will host and maintain the site for the user.

How much is a reasonable and competitive upfront charge and what do you recommend for monthly maintenance? Just trying to get a feel for what others are charging as a base. thanks

Well, I am not sure where are you from. I am from Bangladesh and I normally do not make website for local clients. I change $20 hourly rate whoever I form for. I think everyone should maintain his own wage rate.

I hate to decrease my rate whether it is local client or not.

For maintenance you can just tell your client that you will offer 2 hours weekly maintainace service if require and you will change $$. Anything more than that time may be subject ot extra payment.

It is also true for hosting.

It is just my opinion. And I follow it in my way of living

    Thanks
    Sabbir

    Hi Steve,

I normally charged $250-500 for site building.

If it is Blogger blog or html site, it will be $250-300.

If it is Wordpress, it is $350-500 because of the need to install theme and plugins.

For monthly maintenance, it will be $20. If it is just hosting, it will be $10. But if it is included with autoresponder, it will be $20.

A lot depends on where you are in the world (and where your client is, too).

In England, for example, London based developers appear to be more expensive than developers based in the north of England.

Sounds relatively specialized programming work if you are developing it from scratch rather than using Wordpress/ Joomla/ Drupal, so factor that into your pricing, too.

The amount I charge is based on the job that needs to be performed. The last site I built was a 10 page wordpress site and I charged $1200 plus $250/yr hosting.

The price you charge should be completely dependent on how much you need to be paid to cover your expenses and a reasonable profit.

You can do a search in your local aria for the exact same website and niche you are going to make for your client to find out what the going rates are then go from there.

How big is the site? What platform would you be using? How much is the client expected to earn from your services? Is there any scope of repeat business?...there are a bunch of questions that need be answered first.

There are websites that sell for 50 bucks and then there are those that sell for 5k too. Don't worry too much about pricing. You just need to be able to justify your pricing and the money should make you happy. That's what matters most. If you are "forced" to bring down your price, you'd never be able to put in 110% into your work and thats going to take a toll on quality.

But, don't charge something thats going to make you feel guilty either. Look at competitor prices and price your services keeping the above factor in mind. That way you can properly break down and justify the pricing to your client and he'd be happy to pay.
