I just got an offer of $10 per "press release" I do for a client. But I'm not sure how to go about writing press releases? Can someone point me to a WSO or resource online that can help me? Thanks!

Several tips for writing pres release:
    1. Grab attention with a good headline.
The beginning of a press release -- just as with a magazine article, book or promotional pamphlet -- is the most important. A strong headline (and, for that matter, email subject line when you send out the pitch) will pull in journalists seeking good stories. Your headline should be as engaging as it is accurate.

    2. Get right to the point in the first paragraph.

Because reporters are busy people, you must assume that they will only read the first sentence and then scan the rest -- and even that's a generous assumption. Get the message of your press release out quickly. Every important point should be addressed in the first few sentences. The subsequent paragraphs should be for supporting information.

    3. Include hard numbers.

    Here is my suggestion:
    1. find out exactly what type of press release you need and keep in mind the fact that the tone can be more formal or less formal, depending on who it is addressed to.
    2. take notes on general aspects of writing press releases and learn how to do it properly. This research will serve you in the future as well.
    3. adapt what you research to the type of press release you need.

    General aspects:
the title must catch the eye of the reader (members of the press).
the main information must be in the heading (keep in mind the fact that most of them will not read further than this first paragraph).
the rest of the text will expand on the information in the heading.
end everything with the boilerplate (information on the company- this is standard and you can use the same boilerplate for several press releases, so do it right).

Do not write more than 2 pages MAXIMUM because people will not read it.

    1. Excellent Header
    2. Well written short paragraphs (body)
    4. Should sound like its an interview or report worthy of publishing on a news platform.
    5. Sales links/URLs in three different places
    6. Call to action that looks like its part of the interview in the end.

Read some releases in your niche on PRWeb.

    Hope that helps.

The very best idea is to review other press releases that have already been written, examine them, and compare many of them with each other.

You will need to write your press release in the 3rd person in an objective way which you'll be able to discern after reviewing some releases that are already online.

Another excellent option is to check out the newly expanded resources section inside my press release software that has been a WSO for over 6 years. We will be releasing v4.1 with the press release resource section tonight as a WSO (Keep your eye on my signature below).

Otherwise lastly feel free to join my "Publicity & Press Releases" group inside LinkedIn. It is updated about 4 times a week where you'll find extremely valuable dedicated press release content that you won't find ANYWHERE else:

That's not true at all. There's 2 ways to do it...
      1. f you have a ground breaking story that will achieve national, international, or major attention then of course hire someone for big bucks to do it for you so you can get all the possible coverage that you deserve.
      1. The other way to do it is by modifying press release templates so it suits your needs. Modifying a professional created press release template is a quick, easy, and fairly painless way to get your news out for your business.

      Best,

      Justin

The essentials regarding press releases never really change; the media (online and offline) has always been and always will be hungry for quality news-worthy content. An excellent classic study for beginners, and which I used quite successfully as a reference tool back in the day is "Writing Effective News Releases: How To Get Free Publicity For Yourself, Your Business, Or Your Organization", by Catherine V. McIntyre. It's available on Amazon (2nd edition 2008)

To benefit everyone that sees this thread with little or no press release experience FYI this is a terrible example of a press release...DO NOT study it

It breaks ALL of the major rules and doesn't even include any element for action to be taken

mathewboly not to come off harsh but the truth is you will serve your clients better if you studied the basic rules of writing press releases.

      Best of Luck,

    $10 per release?

Maybe they'll be generous and give you $1 per article you write also. Then someday they'll pay you what you could earn flipping hamburgers at McDonalds

Some people build their business around the model of charging almost nothing for their writing and think they will make money cranking out a large volume. I'll bet 90% burn out.

For $10/release you are probably better paying someone on fiverr $5 so at least you make $5 for a few minutes of your time.

If you want to accept $10 per press release and use it as a way to make a little money while you are learning how to write good press releases (that actually produce results) so in the future you can charge a lot more then doing it makes a little more sense.

Just remember though, if you accept so low of an amount from the client it will be almost impossible for them to see the value of what you are doing and charge them substantially more in the future

    Ron

Do not take the offer. $10 won't cover the time it takes to write the first line. Before you even work on what format to follow, pick one and try it to see the time it takes, the pros spend 8-10 hours on them easily and they know what they are doing. OK, good luck whatever you do. Edward Smith.

I think it suffices to pick a few high pr press release website and take a look not just at the articles posted in there, but alto to their publishing guidelines.
Also important, make sure that your press release is truly news worthy - many companies choose a lousy subject and use it as a pretext to write down a press release.
Otherwise, carefully craft a sizzling headline and a first, very specific paragraph that should answer the five main questions of any news: who, what, when, where and why!
For more credibility, you should also insert a quote of one of the company's representatives and end up with a boiler plate - the paragraph that describes the company you have written the press release for.
It's not that hard, if you'll read several examples that you can find all over the web you'll recognize all these aspects.
