Branching out of my niche?

Hi All,

One more question from me I was just wondering. I have a keyword specific URL, for example iPhoneWiki.com (just an example) and I want to start writing about Technology / Computers and Software etc.

Is this a bad idea? As it is not got anything to do with my URL, or does it not matter?

Thanks

    Hi,

Ideally your domain name should be descriptive, especially if you're blogging for business.

I'm not really a fan of keyword rich domains because they don't hold that much weight anymore when it comes to search engine rankings, so if you do register another one, I'd focus on a good domain that communicates your brand instead.

    Hope that helps!

It does matter. You wouldn't want to go buy jewellery from a shop that says "Hot Pizzas" on the board but displays jewelry on the window right? Same for your traffic. People should be able to relate your web name with its contents.

Also, the search bots would get a bit confused and if you are running adsense or something similar you'd risk showing wrong ads sometimes.

So, its probably not worth it. Keep the domain and its contents (hopefully you already have something there) and create a new site altogether with a new domain.

Thats a very clever way of looking at it, I totally agree now and I am going to stick with my niche.

      Thanks again!

I would recommend getting a new domain. I try to make my domain as close as I can to what the site is about. People will trust the site more. You will also score higher with the search engine as well. Alternatively you could also come up with a subdomain site, but that is really not as good.
