Can I get "Think and Grow Rich" as a Free Give away?

Hi all,

I have seen so many people giving away "think and grow rich" by napoleon hill and I wanted to do the same.

I am assuming it is public domain, but not sure.

I wanted to add it as a bonus item to one of my ebooks.

Can anyone advise me as to where I can get it so that I can offer it myself as a bonus download, without breaking any laws on copyright etc.

I've been looking for this as well....

I think most people are copying it from Gutenberg or some other source and adding their stuff. I haven't wanted to do this for fear of doing something wrong.

Is there a legitimate source you can obtain this? I should be public domain, right?

I offer it as a bonus to my Chimp Change report.

There's tons of copies of the book around. I've seen at least 2 different ones. The one I currently use I think is probably closer to the actual printed book.

So where did you get your copy? Can we use it as our own?

My copy I got as a free copy a long time ago. I don't even remember where.

You can use it, I don't care. Everyone should read it anyway

This book is not in the public domain.

            It was published in 1937.

Books published from the year 1912 and earlier are in the public domain.
            Jennifer

            Thanks for that Jennifer,

If it is breaking the law, even if everyone else is doing it, then I will stay away from it.

However, to be honest I am still not convinced. I bought public domain riches a while back, and still haven't had time to go through it yet, but I thought there was some other law that came in in the 60's or 70's that might mean that it is o.k. I thought the copyright was the life of the owner plus 70 years, but I thought that only came into effect in the last - I don't know - 40 years or so. And I don't know when Napoleon died.

You sound a million times more knowledgable on this than me. But I am going to go away and do some more research so I have all my facts straight because offering something like this as a bonus would be awesome for the type of people I target.

Thanks again jennifer, you have made me realise more research is needed on my part.

There does exist a particular copy of Think And Grow Rich that is in the public domain I understand, but it's really hard to find. And the Hill estate will make your life a nightmare if you do try to do anything with it. They are very aggressive about protecting that property.

I can appreciate that, so can I use one of the other copies floating around like everyone else does.

Or should I rephrase that and say - "how do I go about using one of the other copies floating around legally?" I know there are probably not many lawyers on here but is there copies that I can use and just make sure that it has free distribution or sharing rights like "denoble" mentioned.

This is one of those times when everyone in the know shuts up and nobody seems to have the definitive answer.

The copy I have says it should be passed on to everyone out there and it has no disclaimer and no copyright statements, so I do include it in my e-book and give away a free sample. After all, where I got it a few months ago was a legit site which gave it away free and said to pass it on as well.

I think I was lucky enough to get my hands on the public domain copy.

Although if I ever get a warning of some sort I'll remove it.

You can get it here: www.TheNewbieBlueprint.com it's in the free sample

Books first published in the United States before January 1, 1923 or earlier are in the public domain.

Books published between 1923 and 1964 had to have their copyright renewed in order to still be under copyright protection today.

That's the stuff I'm sure of. What comes below is what I've read online, so don't put too much stock into it!

From what I've read, the original 1937 edition of Think and Grow Rich is in the public domain, because Napoleon Hill did an updated version in the 1960's and copyrighted that version, and did not renew the copyright on the older version.

If that's true, then the earlier work would be in the public domain and could be used. However, that's something I'd definitely look into further and confirm before using the work in any way!

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Yes, I did some research and the 1937 edition IS in the public domain.

In fact, if you read, it says somewhere that you should give it away to everyone.

There are several sources, but this one should do: Think and Grow Rich: Title Page

    And I quote the website:

"scanned at sacred-texts.com, July 2006. Proofed and formatted by John Bruno Hare. This text is in the public domain in the United States by the terms of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act because it was published between 1923 and 1964 inclusive, and not renewed at the US Copyright office in a timely fashion. These files may be used for any non-commercial purpose, provided this notice of attribution is left intact in all copies. This electronic edition is not sponsored or endorsed by, or otherwise affiliated with Napoleon Hill, his family and heirs, the Napoleon Hill Foundation, the Ralston Society, or any past or present publishers of this book."

Wow, This is the sort of info I wanted. Thanks everyone.

Daniel, I bought your blueprint a couple of weeks ago. I know I have the copy of think and grow rich from it. I just haven't had a chance to read it yet.

I think I will go ahead and use it. I can always pull it if anyone yells at me and has proof that I should not be using it. But so many self improvement sites etc use it I don't think it will be a problem.

      Adios
