Is passion really necessary to succeed?

I'm sure there are a lot of people on here that are not passionate about their niches (nor an expert at them), but have created passive income streams by outsourcing most of the content to people who are passionate about the niche.

What do you guys think of this?

Absolutely, passion is not necessary in that sense. I like to make at least some parts of each projects fun/interesting though. There's more to running a business than just the money - if you dread waking up and starting another day as self-employed you're doing something wrong IMO

    Passion is a must!

But passion is not what we really think, it's actually the combination of 3, look below:

What you love + What you are good at + What pays well.

With niche sites where I don 't have any interest, I failed.

But the ones where I had true passion, I succeeded, like my passion is in web design and sharing internet marketing resources.

    Hope this helps!

Before I add my 2 cents, I just want to say that your premise of passion = being an expert in something is incorrect. You can be passionate about something but not an expert in it.

Either way, it's not absolutely necessary to be passionate about your project or business, but it does help. It helps because it gives you more motivation to work on it and to be creative and try new things to increase sales. If you're not passionate about it, you can still make money and grow, but you won't be motivated to stay up late at night, analysing everything about it, and trying to find even the most obscure ways of increasing sales.

Finally, if you're asking this question because you have an idea but you'e not sure if you want to work on it because you're not passionate about it, or not an expert in it, then I say those are just excuses holding you back. By all means launch the thing. You never know, if it becomes successful you'll start learning more about it, start getting more interested in it, and eventually become passionate about it.

Very well said! Being passionate on one thing does not always mean that you the best at it. That can come in the future. After years of being passionate about it, one will learn from it, and be good at it.

It might not be the niche one is passionate about. Its probably the idea of earning money online from all of the niches one think is interesting.

Perhaps not passion so much as

You REALLY like what you're doing!!

I've been in profitable niches where I didn't care at all about the idea... and I simply lost interest in continuing to update the material.

But when I'm invested in said material it becomes 'way easier.

But you'll probably not believe this simply by hearing it - you have to experience it for yourself.

    Best of skill!

It depends on the business and on you working processes.
    I explain:
    - I tried to run a blog on a very lucrative niche, but had no personal interest in it. Creating engaging, interesting content was a nightmare for me. I tried to hire writers, but it did not work. I wasted 3 years on this blog and finally gave up.

    - I have very successful blogs on topics that I LOVE! I always have ideas, interesting opinions, can easily instruct writers and it actually works!

    - I also have a successful e-commerce site selling baby care products, which I have no personal interest in (well, anymore... I used to have), and it works because it is e-commerce and not a blog. I do hire copywriters though

So I think that if it is a blog or info product - it has to come with passion, but if it is a e-commerce not necessary

On the other hand -if you have a professional Internet Marketing company with established processes, you should make decisions based on ROI, profitability and other financial criteria - than the passion is just nice to have. The passion is to run a business and the topic is not important. You find someone to be passionate about a topic while you are passionate about growing your business

Passion for what you are doing is absolutely necessary, and this works for all fields.

You can be passionate about your niche and still not be an expert, If you are passionate, you will be finding answers on your niche and gradually become an expert.

Of course, you can outsource the stuff but if you are not passionate, the guys whom you have outourced to, might fool you.

Passion is also required when times are low and things are not working as planned, In Internet Marketing, there might be times when you are not earning as much as you had expected.

It will be the passion that will keep you moving further in your journey and will help you not quit.

I know a few people with networks of over 100 websites - they're definitely not passionate about all those niches.
If you are passionate about making money, I guess you can stick to your plan and work on niches you are not even interested in, just because they are profitable.
After all, the biggest problem would be to provide content, and for that there are many writers out there who can do the unpleasant work for you, so you can simply focus on marketing.
I guess that leads us to passion for money and for internet marketing, not necessarily in this order

True Katty, but they could be passionate about the mechanics of building these sites, no? Then they could enjoy their work, and not be as focused on the content creation, etc. Just food for thought.

I'm passionate about being able to do pretty much anything I want, any time I want. I'm able to follow my passion because in my business, I go where the money is.

I get kind of tired of hearing this.

If what you are passionate about will earn you a comfortable living, good for you. Most people will not have that option. They will have to build a business where they can, with the opportunities presented.

Look at really successful, wealthy people; do you think they were all passionate about the means by which they acquired their fortunes?

Do you think John D. Rockefeller was passionate about oil? I know for a fact he was passionate about the money and power it afforded him.

I believe it’s important that you feel passionate about your subject as for me the passion behind my niche fuels the drive to carry on when success was not instant! Plus when you are passionate about your subject you know that it’s easy for you to share quality content as it flows freely from you more than if your subject is not your passion.

In the past I have set up websites in niches that are (or should be) very profitable, and that I knew quite a lot about before I started.

The problems came because I wasn't really passionate about the topic and I couldn't get motivated to produce content or promote them. Since no money comes in for a while I couldn't even get excited about that, so as my interest dwindled they got abandoned.

I know of people who can work around this lack of passion, but I haven't managed it yet

Passion is key to your success. It makes your job, not “just a job,” but a meaningful part of your life. If you are losing sight of what you are passionate about, your goals are too small.

Passion is often displayed in person. Marketers now have the opportunity to convey their passion through multiple social networks and interactions within seconds. They have the chance to share their passion with a large audience.

Successful marketers channel their passion through their brand authentically online and offline. In return, your customers will be your biggest advocates without any incentive to do so. Think of your favorite brand, the one you are most passionate about. How many times have you tweeted to your thousands of followers or shared on Facebook how much you love this brand without any reason? The relationship between a brand and an ambassador is built on trust, not rewards.

It is an important reminder that passion does not replace skill, it enhances it. Someone who is passionate about their job responsibilities and the business’ mission is the best of both worlds. Here at Likeable Media, our internal core value statement is: “We are driven, passionate, transparent, adaptable thought leaders. We are Likeable.” We are passionate in everything we do.

Finding your passion takes time. Figure out what you are truly passionate about and run with it

I think you need passion for Internet marketing in general. You can run your business and work on it as opposed to working in it.

This way you work at moving your business forward as an owner and you can hire out the day to day details of whatever your business model is.

This is why sites such as Fiverr, oDesk, Easy Outsource, and iWriters have been successful. Successful Internet marketers who work on their business hire tasks to be done by people they hire to work in it for them.

I understand your point. Success without happiness is not success.

I guess you could be passionate about internet marketing in general without being passionate about the niche you're in. Someone who is a passionate entrepreneur can go into any profitable niche, create passive income so they don't have to work that hard, and do something they enjoy (like travel, spend time with family, etc.)

I think pursuing you can "run out of steam" pursuing any niche that you do not share a passion for. You can outsource content writing and videos all you want, but you need to keep your finger on the pulse of developments in that niche or your surface gloss treatment of it will become obvious to those who are passionate about it. Not to mention the fact that having that passion will make spending time in that niche seem much less like actual work. Passion is also infectious and will lead to a following and establishing a sphere of influence in that niche.

Be passionate or burn down after a few months. I can't even tell you how badly people's interest in a topic dies down after a few months, especially when it generates barely any revenue.

However, it can be something like a secondary business. If that's the case, long-term passive cash on the side would be your priority for that instead.

Whatever you call it, you need it to be successful in online business.

It propels you forward to set up your business when roadblocks and obstacles pop up at every turn.

It pushes you to execute your daily grind when there are lots of other things you'd rather do.

It carries you through the early lean years when your business is trying to gain some traction.

It forces you to get some outside help when you can't figure things out for yourself.

It makes working in your business tolerable when you're tired.

It is something that the majority of new business owners lack.

So what is it ? Passion? Persistence? Determination? Stubbornness? Attitude? Willpower?

My humble opinion . . . it is probably a combination of all of the above.

The best to all of you, I hope you get it.

I believe a firm grasp on what you qualify as the meaning of "success" is necessary. There are countless droves of people stuck in monotonous, dreary existences where copious amounts of money are made...is that success? sure. I've always thought part of the appeal to orchestrating a living on the internet was the ability to follow your passion. But I believe that not every passion is profitable. If I'm passionate about designing clothing for pet fish, I might have a tough time making my passion profitable. Passion might not be necessary for financial success, but I believe is integral towards your personal satisfaction, fulfillment and pride in your craft. Without passion, we're robots.

If you are a beginner passion is necessary because you will have to keep writing about the same topic to promote your business. It will be very hard for you to build a business based on something you don't like.

When you already know how to make money online, you can work on other niches.

I had an offline store in the past, and the only reason why I had it was because it was a ready business with regular customers and it was already making money. I was in the position of a boss, but I didn't care about clothes and I was indifferent to the fashion. This store was a convenient way to make money because my family was in this business.

I'm so glad I'm not working there anymore, even though I’m very far from having the income I had with this business.

    Yes and No

Yes: to do anything in life you have to have a mindset to do it. I mean, to go for a hiking, your mind must be ready before your body will do it. Hence, for everything the mind must go there first and then the body follows. If you dont have passion and cant focus on what your destination is, then your body wont follow. Passion is needed for success.

No: you have to be damn lucky to succeed without passion.

Mark Cuban focuses on "following your effort" and says not to follow your passion, but without a passion, how would anyone be motivated to put forth the effort? I think that guy says things sometimes just to be controversial and to get publicity.

One size does not fit all. Everyone is motivated by different things. You can be passionate about feeding your children and that could force you to do things you don't want to do, even in business.

Everyone also defines success differently. If we're talking only about pure financial success as how you define it, then I would say "no", you don't need passion to achieve financial success, however, it's very difficult to succeed without it.

RoD, I believe what Cuban means is that if you put enough effort into something a passion for it will eventually build. But passion is not necessarily a prerequisite. That said, I do believe he goes for the wow factor at times when choosing his words.

I tend to agree with you. A passion for what you're doing isn't really necessary. A passion for something that is available to you as a result of what you're doing can be enough. Kind of like selling via features and benefits. One may not be particularly fond of using mouth wash, but who doesn't want kissable fresh breath?

Also, there is a difference between not being passionate and being miserable. If you ask me, the word passion is thrown around way too lightly. As long as you're not miserable and you throw enough effort into it, eventually your first hand experience will likely build into a high level of enjoyment or perhaps even passion. If not, you can always cash out and use the proceeds to go do whatever makes your heart sing.

Yes, that's another point he was making and I'm sure for some people that's true.

He's also assuming that people who follow their passion aren't following their efforts. Again, true for some and not true for others.

Kind of like selling via features and benefits. One may not be particularly fond of using mouth wash, but who doesn't want kissable fresh breath?
Kissable fresh breath is a good thing, at least that's what the girlfriend tells me.

Good point; in fact, one of the comments underneath the article makes that very point.

Let me make another point about "passion" and it illustrates how different individuals can be.

There are people who can dive into a market or a niche and not be very passionate about the topic, but as entrepreneurs, they become very passionate about the business they build around it. They become passionate about their customers.

The very first niche I went into was the wedding planning market and found a niche underneath it that catered to young couples who wanted to get married on a budget. I was NOT passionate about wedding planning and, in fact, knew very little about it.

So why pursue it? I saw an opportunity and a gap in the market at the time that wasn't being served properly, so I did not research, found a local expert to help me with the content. I was very passionate about the business, though, and it came through in my sales funnel and customer support.

But some people won't put forth the effort if they don't have a passion for the topic or the niche. Which goes back to my main point: we are all wired a little differently.

Ultimately, I think having passion helps, but passion without effort is pretty worthless.

If you want to get passionate over something get passionate over the marketing process, what works what doesn't etc etc.

look at the fine detail get passionate over squeezing another 2 % points on your conversion rate

If your passionate about the marketing process the subject matter doesn't matter.

In making money in any Niche the marketing process is what generates wealth, not the subject matter itself.

If you have that "burning desire" to achieve something, then I can bet you will do it. It doesn't matter who you exactly will achieve your goals, important is to have clear goals to follow and the desire to achieve them.

Maybe not passion about your target niche but passion about what you do. That's what really matters.

I want to avoid the hackneyed cliches, but it does seem that there has to be some drive that might be called passion somewhere in the process. Where exactly may differ. What you call it may differ. But I just can't image people taking the action required to be successful without it (whatever it is...)

Personally, I feel it is. Your site is not going to succeed if you have no passion in it as you're probably going to get bored after a month of owning it. Never own a site you have no passion for.

Passion is not necessary, but definitely gives you an advantage. Someone who is passionate will probably be prone to learning quicker, and having higher work effort.

    Yes, Yes, and Yes!

Passion is essential to be successful IMO. When I lost passion I didn't do shit. When I found it again things started changing. It doesn't have to be passion for a particular thing but living and life in general. It can include so many things.

A friend once told me it's a lot easier when a train is moving to switch the tracks and move it in another direction. But when it stops it is much harder to get it going.

And I say, keep that train going and switch direction if need be in a good direction. But do your best to not let it stop. Passion is the engine!

Passion is a term applied to very strong feelings about a person or thing. Passion is an intense emotion compelling, enthusiasm, or desire for anything. Passion is an effective emotion needed for true business success.

As my Facebook states: These 5 simple phrases (Innovation, Passion, Change the world, Think different and Imagination) can change the entire course of any business and evolve that business into a successful company.

    Definitely

But there are quite a few other 'attributes' that I believe are more important...

And often more missed out on than passion

    One would be: risk

You definitely need passion in what you are doing, especially in the beginning or 9 times out of ten you'll quit or you will jump to the next "thing" that distracts you because it seems easier.

Tell me, why wouldn't you want to profit from your passion if it met all the criteria of an online business? Don't you think you'd be more focused on what it is you want to do? At the end of the day it's up to you what you decide to do but don't you think you'd be more inclined to try new marketing strategies and test new things on a business you where passionate about? (at least to some degree)

    Of course you would...

I think passion is a good thing depending on your personal definition of success,

If your question is about "Making Money Online",
Is passion really necessary to succeed - to make money? NO, because, no matter what niche you are in, what you need is TRAFFIC

    So, passion about what?

Myself, I'm passionate about making money to better the life of my family, for me, that is success.

Now, when I dig in a new niche to profit from, do I "need" to be passionate about it?, absolutely "not"

Just make sure that what you do online is good and if you don't like it, outsource.

Passion for a subject clouds the mind... just because your passionate about doesn't mean that people with disposable income are as well.

Never create, or sell products on the basis you think its a great subject. create and sell products for which there is a hungry market.

hence my post about getting passionate about the process not the content

Passion is a very important ingredient in success.
    Without passion,you could achieve success
but that's going to be short lived
and you'll burn out in the long run.

If a person is really passionate about his subject or niche,
it really shows in his writing.
The person keeps enjoying his work
    and success becomes a byproduct.
