Some dude Jake Smith squatted on mine. What a douche. Jake Smith | Facebook Trying to figure out best course of action right now. You might want to run over to Facebook and grab yours before someone else does. And if you have a peculiar name, you may even be able to get just your first name alone. Good luck. Anybody else get squatted on? Anybody know the best course of action? I will pester this Jake Smith til the end of eternity I tell ya. And possibly even "Sue" Facebook like Tony LaRussa if they don't give it back to me. That would be good for some press I bet. |

It really just shows how miserable some people are. They have nothing better to do than go mess with other people. $10 says "Jake Smith" is a poor and unhappy individual. |

Meh, I don't care if someone grabs mine. If it's still available, anyone here who reads this message can take my username if they like.

Wow.. I had no idea that the vanity URL crap would become such a thing... Your best course of action is probably to contact FB, starting a thread here solves less than anything.... this dude probably expects you to mail him and make some stupid offer of $$ for it... You're right, bit of a douche.. personally, though... I don't get Facebook... so it wouldn't bother me and I'd forget it quicker than my daughter forgets toys... ![]() Peace Jay |

Well, Jake Smith is such an uncommon name. I'm really shocked that someone else would have taken it. I got mine but then I did a Google search for it, and was horrified that my name also showed up killers/robbers and all sorts of 'evil' people. I thought I owed it to my name to at least have a respectable kind of link! Ken |

Mofo, I posted about this earlier this morning (around 5am EST) and the post got deleted within 5 minutes of being up. It seems as though people running bots might have swapped a crap ton of names. My name was taken as well, in all variations (period in between, etc.), by the same person. Multiple accounts had the same pic, no friends, 1 photo, blah blah. I'm frustrated with this as well. I have no doubt Facebook will give it back to me. After all I dominate the search engines for my name, own jasonmoffatt.com and am the largest Jason Moffatt in Facebook as well. I'm sure they'll hook me up. |

That's plain stupid, why take an username that doesn't looks alike your name at all? Selling is out of question since you can't change the username once you set it up. |

Beatufiul, I got on at 12:30am and my name was already taken. Oh well atleast my full name, first and last wasn't taken so I got that. Not what I would ideally want to show but meh, it was my 2nd choice anyway.

Wow, that sucks Jason! I really am curious to know if it was some kind of bot because FB was REALLY strict about grabbing usernames: 1) no one who wasn't a member before 31 May could score a name 2) no business "fan page" could score a name without 1000 fans as of 31 May An indie business group that I'm in launched a HUGE campaign yesterday because they heard about the 1000 member rule...what they didn't realize is that they had to have had 1000 fans by 31 May, not last night. Last night, I tried creating a new account to grab my business name, and it wouldn't let me. Now someone else has it. Of course, she's a real person...not just a blank page. Since "Jake Smith" looks like he doesn't exist, I can only guess that it was a bot...the program wouldn't have let him sign up otherwise. Keep us updated on what will happen...I'm really curious to see what Facebook will do, especially if there were evil name-stealin' bots! -Buzzy |

Queenbuzzy, I think they did away with that 1000 followers rule because I've seen plenty of people who didn't have 1000 followers on their fan page mention that they were able to create a vanity URL. |

Jason, That's still rough you have to deal with it, and I too think it will be easy for you to get it back (other than the hassle of it all) I had a musician friend of mine on the ready at midnight to grab her name and we got it. She didn't get her name on twitter so I am trying to think of a good work around. Sarah Pierce Cowboys Daughter Americana Music Mark Riddle |

Not to hijack the thread, but for those who couldn't get a username for a Page because of the date and fan restrictions, you'll be able to do it on June 28th. From Facebook Help: Quote:

Hey Jason, I just tried to set a username for my page again...it keeps telling me I'm not special enough. I just have to wait until 28 June. I'm trying not to take it personally. *sigh* |

Yea, this is a big problem. I guess they are doing it for SEO purposes? Other than that I don't know how having someone else's name would be an advantage.

Hi Jason, (tongue in cheek) I understand your frustration, but perhaps it's someone who bought that product of yours a while back about buying youtube IDs for traffic, and they were inspired by the concept and thought that this might be a good way to make some coin using a similar concept? Sorry, couldn't resist the tease If Greg Noll was an IMer, that's the kind of thing he'd do (while wearing stripey b/w shorts).

The douche only has one friend... such a pain that people are allowed to do that... it should only be allowed to be your name, or some combination of your name and something else - shouldnt just plain be allowed to steal a completely different name. That sucks.

What an idiot. I bet Facebook will get it back for you since it's obvious that this guy does not share your name. I didn't care about getting mine but grabbed it in case someone else tried to. I'm the only one with my name as far as I know but I didn't want to leave the window open for someone to cause trouble with my name, heard too many horror stories like that. ![]() Wendy |

Jason, I loved your blog rant about it. Hopefully Facebook fixes the mess that they created and you can get your name instead of some punk having it. After this thread I went and was able to grab mine http://www.Facebook.com/SylviaRolfe but of course I'm no big time marketer so no one was going to steal it anyway LOL.. Good luck in getting it all resolved. Sylvia |

I seriously doubt that you will get it just by contacting them. The basis for this "vanity url" was for each person to gain a username, not necessarily your actual name. Wish you luck. -Christian |

Wouldn't be surprised if many grabbing the names think they will be able to sell them. That's what happened with domains and many companies and celebrities paid a pretty price to buy their particular domain from someone with the foresight to register it. Facebook created its own monster - will be interesting to see how they deal with it. kay |

Kay, not sure if that will be possible with Facebook, because you get told that it is permanent, once done can't change it again. At the moment it seems unlikely people can sell them on.

Going public puts you at disadvantage as any good lawyer will tell you. Note: I'm not a lawyer. But I've had domain name experiences similar to yours. Quote:
Let's be honest your probably not the only Jason Moffatt on the planet what would stop another Jason Moffatt suing you for mis-representing him on the internet. It's ridiculas and it's got to stop. Your behaviour is just is important as the person who registered the vanity url. I respect that your a successfuly Internet Marketer who generates alot of income, however it doesn't give you the right over every social media site to use the name Jason Moffatt. Let's be real about the situation the person who is using the url has a locked profile (friends only) and he/she cannot redirect the url or really do much with it other that point it the facebook profile. (Pretty pointless excercise) So it has no real money value because of that. I can see why it's worth alot to you personally and you have online reputation to protect. You could go down the path like Shoemoney aka Jeremy Schoemaker and create a unqiue name and trademark. That would definately give you the upperhand in matters like this. I want to thank you Jason for bringing it up! I've been a member here for years and it's very rare that I comment on such post becuase they are few and far between! Regards Myles Agnew | |||

Jason, sorry to hear about your problem. You need to contact FB and see if you can get the name back. You may want to read this article. Myself I made it a point to wake up at 6 AM (EU timezone) and... overslept. Thankfully I still managed to grab http://facebook.com/grabowski later in the morning :-) |
