Links on this forum, (Question)

Are you a loud to send links to you own website, let's say someone is asking a question and on your website you made a post or free tutorial that is going to be of great help to them, are you able to link it?

Thanks for any input

regards, JeanMarc

    JeanMarc,

Linking to your own site within a post would be seen as self-promotional and is likely to get it deleted. Better just to answer the question in the post itself.

You can put links to your site in your sig file, but don't refer to your sig when posting.

There is a bit of wiggle room, but it's very easy to cross the line from trying to be helpful and trying to drive traffic by linking rather than helping.

Start answering questions with "I wrote a blog post/tutorial, here's the link" and those posts will disappear.

Even if your motives are pure, too much of that kind of posting serves as a precedent for those who would abuse the privilege.

Several years ago, the forum allowed affiliate links if certain etiquette was followed. That was abused to the point of making the forum unusable, so the practice had to be banned. "See my site" posts are almost there.

I have done it before but you have to make sure that you don't go over the top. Answer the question in full and then link to your site for further reading, but you'd better make damn sure that the link helps the OP and others reading the thread.

No. You are not allowed to link to your own sites. You are also not allowed to say see my signature to get people to click on your signature.

Or simply, that no one sees it and reports it. If they get reported, the mods delete them. Do it too often and your signature mysteriously disappears in the case of "see my sig" spam or banned in the case of link spamming.

JeanMarc, the answer to your question is "it depends".

This is the Main Discussion Forum, where people like to talk about making money and engaging in discussions about them. If someone were to post a link to their website and write "the answer is here" or "click on my link to find a free tutortial", we would delete that everytime we saw it.

We generally don't allow those types of posts because it doesn't add to the discussion. It can also appear self-promotional, even if that is not the person's intent. Way too many people have abused posting links inside threads to answer questions, so it depends on how it's done and in what context.

It also depends on the member. If the member has a track record of being helpful, posting helpful replies to people, and doesn't engage in useless rants or flame wars, and if that member posts a helpful link to their website (or another one) that's educational and within the context of the topic, then that's something we'll probably allow.

There's a long-standing member in this forum who provides very useful links to legal cases or legal news that may impact people's businesses and we allow it because he adds context and he is a member in a good standing.

I hope this clarifies your question about linking to your own website. If not, please send me a private message and I'll do my best to answer it.
