What do you do when...

...you've got an idea for a website, but have no idea where to start?

I'm not talking about a simple WordPress site because everyone knows how to do that.

I've got an idea for a site and I doubt I could do the whole thing on WordPress because that's where I'm at right now and it's not working out too great.

I want users to be able to create their own pages with their own information and uploads. For example, a less complex MySpace.

I'm aware that I will most likely have to build this site from scratch.

I'm also aware that this is a massive, complex project that will probably take a long time to build.

But I have absolutely no idea where to start. I know very little about code beyond CSS, HTML, and simple PHP, so any tips on different codes to use would be awesome.

Right now, I'm just looking for some advice or direction. Actually, any programming advice or advice from anyone that has built sites from scratch would definitely help.

Not trying to be sold to at the moment =]

If you want advice from a programmer, i'll say "Learn some programming languages to start your project"
I know it's a little bit difficult, but when you try to create your own website from scratch and code everything but hands you'll ejoy the process.
I've done it several times, i got my downs, but i was happy with the results at the end.

I'm not sure if I understand exactly what you're asking about but I would take a moment and check out this website-done-for-you service.

Suzanne is a long time Warrior Forum member and can probably send you in the right direction even if her product is not exactly what you're looking for.

She sells Woo themes (WP) with a plug-in that she will set up so you can allow others to have a dashboard and create their own sites or stores. Whether that would fit for non-commercial applications, I don't know.

Here is a link to her thread.

She gives great service so see what she says. I apologize if you're looking for something else completely different.

I would definitely ask a programmer and get multiple offers. Also you will want to look at the programmers feedback as well.

My personal opinion is that you should set yourself a budget to get things moving.

Get the basic framework of the site developed and online, spend a little on traffic to get some beta testers onto it and then maybe look for some crowdfunding to take the feedback and take it to the next level before you release in full.

This would then probably mean a long term development team of some sort and also a reasonable advertising budget if the idea is anything like the scale you seem to have in mind.

I am sure if it is a good idea though you will make large returns so good luck.

Thanks, Steve B. I'll definitely look into that because that's something I would like users to be able to do on my site sometime in the future.

Yes, karlmay, I'm looking to do exactly that. Get at least something moving before trying to grow larger.

I've got something in place at the moment, but I think I need to take it to the next level. Right now, I'm doing everything on the backend and it's getting overwhelming to have users messaging me to edit their stuff while still creating pages for new signups. To solve that problem I want users to be able to create and edit their own pages.

Crowdfunding might actually be a really good idea for what I want to do

I was thinking of Ruby, that's what someone else suggested too, before I came to the forum.

I've also been told to look into PHP and Java.

      Any thoughts?
