Hi

If I find an image on Google that I wish to use how can I find out who owns it? Are some images free?

Use some of the royalty free image sites. Just taking one from Google won't tell you if it's free or not.

    Try Morguefiles
or one of the other download sites. Not all are free but at least you know you can use them with no comeback.

It's not a good idea to be using images you find on google. Either you can find royalty free images in the public domain gallery publicdomainpictures.net or else you'll need to buy them in some image stock site.

Just buy some. You are much more likely to find high quality images that fit your needs and you know exactly what rights you have.

You will find better pictures if you pay for them, as suggested above you can try bigstockphoto.com or istock and there are a couple of WSO's that were selling stock photos for IM.

I think it is a good idea to own the graphic by your own. Copy-paste may have some copyright issues. There are plenty of resources available on the net. Thanks, Sam

If you find the picture on Google image then you should be able to see the site associated with it by opening the image and clicking the link on the right hand side.

Anytime you are using anyone's graphics, just know 2 things:

    1. They may not be the owner of that graphic and they copied it themselves.

    2. If you do find the original owner, you need to ask for their permission.

There are so many places to buy images now, it is not worth it to steal your images. Just go to one of the many stock photo sites and find what you need. It will likely be better anyway.

Most images on Google are copyrighted. Just click on the image to go to the site. Whatever you do, NEVER use copyrighted stuff. Years of hard work would go down the drain in the blink of an eye.

Depending on the type of graphic, you could just go to a site like Fiverr and have someone create it for you. For $5 you won't always get a great graphic, but who cares if you are only out $5. If it is really important and you need a fuller graphics package, you could use another freelancer site where they charge a bit more.

If you are looking to edit an image, check out GIMP, it is the poor man's Photoshop. You can also check out Photoshop, they now offer a subscription service that might be a little bit more budget friendly.

This is NOT true! Google just indexes the images. People own the rights to those images. If you use them and they find out they can at the very least send a cease and desist order to make you stop using it. They can also charge you for the use of the image.

Very, very bad idea. Google images are only indexed by Google, and Google makes no guarantee if they are free to use or not.

Using a copyrighted image (ALL images are copyrighted to someone) without permission, is theft.

I'm astounded at this! Who told you that it's ok to use Google's images? Whoever they are - they should be ousted from whatever forum they are in. They're too dangerous.

Alright Dave, keep ya hair on! No one said anything had been used, I just needed advice on what could and could not be done. It's obvious now that just for peace of mind you're better off spending a few bucks to make the copyright yours (or mine in this case).

      Thanks to all

Google has images you can use and designates USAGE RIGHTS.
      Pick a topic, i.e. "flowers"
Then click on IMAGES and you get a page of images
Next, at the top of the images click on SEARCH TOOLS
      Then click on USAGE RIGHTS
Now you can filter the images base on right available to you i.e. Labeled for reuse or Labeled for noncommercial reuse.

Google is helping you find pictures you can use. NOW, you may want to dig deaper into google terms to see what LABELED FOR REUSE means and what the precise terms are.

I would still be very careful in relying on google's search to determine what rights images have. Always better to be safe than sorry.

Just use a site such as photodune.net to get all your images.

You can NOT use any image you find in the Google index.

Use this site here to find some free images everystockphoto - searching free photos but anyhow, you have to be carefully and in case you want to use an image commercially for an ebook or similar, I always would purchase one with the proper rights.

You can get into big troubles if Getty's or AP's Lawyers find your site/product.

Just do what bobsstuff said above, that is, filter google image results so that it shows only images labeled for reuse noncommercial/commercial.

As for stock photos, I recommend Photodune.net, you can find great pictures there for $1 each for small sizes, which is something around 600px wide. For bigger sizes you pay $2, $3 and so on, so plenty of options there.

I agree with your first paragraph Tomm but the stuff when filtered is cr@p! Can't find anything I'd want to use when free!

You must be careful when using the free sites as many of those are nothing more than wallpaper sites that are full of pirated material.

There are a number of decent sites to obtain Public Domain (CC0) images and many others that are community sites that the users may have their photos licensed Creative Commons (CC) but not CC0...Flickr is an example of a site that has a ton of CC - Attribution Required images in the user galleries.

If an image is a CC image then you need to follow the terms of the CC license which usually means attribution required and possibly no commercial use.

When using images of people for such things as advertising and marketing you should make sure the image is model released. If it is a trademarked product then usually you will need a property release to use the image.

Release are in addition to the actual license to use the photo.

Lastly, you often times never really know if an image on the "free site" is truly free as it could be on that site because someone found the image on the web and they wrongly thought the image was free.

If you purchase an image license (even from a cheap micro-stock site) this will give you the peace of mind of knowing you secured the image properly.

      Regards,

      -don
