Shipping computers overseas--what's the deal?

I have a laptop computer for sale and wasn't able to get my reserve price on ebay so I posted it on craigslist. I've gotten bombarded with requests from people to pay me extra to ship it overseas. I know this is a scam but I don't understand exactly what the scam is. Can anyone explain this?

Thanks

You're selling your computer for $400. They want to send you $1000 and you forward the difference to their friend/family member/whatever. You send them your laptop and keep an extra $100 for your trouble. You get the seemingly legit check that your bank apparently accepts for deposit on your account. You send the $500 to whoever and you think all is well.

Then, about 3 weeks later, your bank has frozen your account because of a fraudulent check you passed. You get investigated by various authorities because of the odd money transfer you did. The scammers walk away with your laptop and $500.

The checks they use are so good that banks accept them and its not until the check is offered to the other end does it come to light, sometimes 6 weeks later, don't think for a minute that you or I would know if a check/money order/bank draft etc etc looks right or not.

      G'day SoEasyMoney,

You could always request payment be made direct to your bank account via an International Telegraphic Transfer, at least you know the $$$ are in your account before shipping the item off to said overseas buyers!

Tell them Western Union only and watch them stop asking.

With PayPal, it could just as easily be a hacked account or opened with stolen creditials.

Good alternative Garrie, forgot all about the old W.U
They either have the cash to transfer or they don't & as Garrie said,
watch them run in the other direction when they know they have to pay
      upfront.
