Should not your name always be on top?

Hi all,

I was looking at a business online. Basically, the person just created a website (about 4 months ago) but - if I type in his business name, what shows up first are things like yellow pages, yelp, etc. In fact, the name of his business is about position #4 or #5. I know that if he didn't have a website, you would see Yellow Pages (and other things like it) first. But he has one, why does one still see Yellow Pages on top?

Why is it that if he googles his own name, it does not come up first in the list?

TIA

Maybe he doesn't have the meta tags/description set correct. Its much easier if you use wordpress seo yoast assuming you use wordpress. Plus most times google indexes real quick but every now and then it takes awhile.

To get his site ranked higher put his site link on those other sites ie "Claim these listings".

You can do this in Yelp, Yellow Pages, Google+, Facebook etc. That will tell Google that his site is THE authority site supported by the directory listings.

Also important is what type of server is his site on? Sometimes cheapy and slow servers will get you pushed down in the rankings as well.

Maybe his traffic source isn't search engines, so he didn't put in efforts to "rank". The ranking you see is probably unintentional.

If you're using WordPress, install All in One SEO or other similar plugins. This allows you to choose where your name shows up and set the meta tags and other elements. The person you're talking about should check his website, add the right plugins and change the theme code if needed.

In this case MATA TAG is very important. Google will be able to find out anything by the mata tag. I think in his website, there may some mistake in the mata tag section.

The recent Pigeon update may be at play. Yelp is now getting an unfair advantage.

He needs to build a few good back links targeting for the business name and wait, with time it will get in top.
