VPS or Reseller Account at Hostgator

Thinking about moving several WordPress sites to a new account at Hostgator.

Anybody have a thought regarding the
Snappy 1000 VPS 60 GB diskspace Bandwidth 1 TB $299 for the first year
vs
Aluminum reseller 50 GB diskspace Bandwidth 500 GB $239 for the first year

Their chat salesperson was not enthusiastic about the VPS as he thought the setup would be problematic.

Did he give any indication as to why he thought it was problematic?

He was just speculating that there were a lot more settings involved in the setup.

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

I wonder what he was trying to say with that vague statement.

I suspect the people answering pre-sales questions are less well informed than the first level tech support people, who are clueless.

I use a basic reseller account and I find it has more than enough capacity to run lots of websites without any problems.

I found this image on Hostgator's VPS sales page to be kind of confusing

a vps is not really designed for more traffic or even better performance for that matter. they were originally designed for people who needed the ability to mess with server settings like they would a dedicated server, but who don't need/want the cost of a fully dedicated server.

the snapy 1000 hg vps only has 1gb ram. that is not too much more than the minimum needed to run cpanel well with all the other stuff the server will have going on. before you start adding traffic, wp plugins.....

thus you very well may end up with less usable ram on the vps than you would have access to on a shared or reseller account.

ps...i imagine what their pre-sales guy was talking about was the vps you mention without cpanel (semi-managed...not what you are probably used to) cpanel is an option on that vps. they know the server will not perform great with cpanel so they dont have it automatically on that lower-end vps.

Do you mind if I ask why you're choosing to go with HostGator? There's been a lot of discussion about the change in management and the degrading service/reliability. I'd suggest you check out some other threads here on WF about that; responded a few pertaining to that.

As well, you shouldn't most hosts will allow you to upgrade if you need to. Although a quick point is that reseller is more subjective to the hosting environment since you're in a highly shared server whereas a VPS is more secure to a certain level

I'd think that's one of the main trade off

I have to ask this too, especially after I recall seeing many posts quoting the EIG wikipedia page telling others not to go with HostGator or any other EIG brands.

See the list of hosts to avoid as posted above

I wouldn't use Godaddy for registering domains (or hosting). I have been using Name.com for over 10 years and am very happy with them, many people here will recommend namecheap, but I was not happy with them and name.com is cheaper by a few $$ a year for each domain.
So, after telling others not to, you'd still rather host with a company that:

      - Blatantly lied about an "upgrade" to cover up a migration from Texas to Utah

      - Sells "dedicated servers" to people that are actually VPS's

      - Entire datacenter has been offline multiple times, full days at a time since moving to Utah with b/s responses on what the issues were

^^I'm not one to bash another company, but the upsells have ALWAYS been bogus for the most part & things have gotten increasingly shady since the acquisition, that many still have no clue even happened - jump ship from one EIG brand right to another.

That said, why are you thinking about a VPS?

Hostgator is garbage. Their customer service, reliability, and just about everything important about a web host has gone downhill the last couple of years.

If you're interested in a VPS, do yourself a favor and get one with another company. Both Liquid Web and WiredTree are excellent. I'm with WiredTree right now and the 24/7 customer service is exceptional.
