Changing From Name On Aweber e-mail? Need your thoughts!

Hi,

We use Aweber as our autoresponder for our twice a week newsletter. Years ago, when we first started our newsletter, we set it up using my wife's name in the "From" line.

Now we're wondering if we would have more opens with newer readers if we changed the "From" name to our brand name, "Living On A Dime".

What are your thoughts on personal name vs. brand name?

If we didn't already have a long history the way it is, I would have started with the brand name...

Thanks!

Michael

Additional relevant info:
  • My wife is known by name by readers in her niche, but I think the LOD brand name is more recognizable to a larger number of people, especially new people.

  • Currently, our e-mail uses "Living On a Dime - Subject of e-mail" in the subject line, but I think changing the "from" name would allow us to make better use of the subject line without wasting those characters.

  • Because of the size of our list, it's going to be very difficult to be able to split test this because we would have to define a custom tag manually for each subscriber.

Thanks again! Michael

If you want to focus on your brand and want to be known by your brand name, then go for it. You may experience a decrease in open rates at first but it may not change as well if your readers already know your brand name. Maybe you could send an email about this change to your readers before making the change so that they will expect the new emails from the brand name and will not miss them.

      Hi Michael,

I agree with Nail's suggestion. Actually, you could even do something else
      as you transition...

You could use your wife's name AND Living on a dime in your from line, i.e.,

Eva @ Living on a dime (provided your wife's name is Eva - replace with her real name of course).

You could use that for a few weeks (and alert your readers to the change and then drop the Eva @ and just go with Living On A Dime.

This is a must to let them know about the name change. If they are anything like me, if they are used to seeing a particular name and a new one pops up, SPAM it goes to. Last thing you want is to get labeled as SPAM because they didn't recognize the name.

I like the idea of sending out the e-mail prior to the change. You might want to have them add the new e-mail address to their "Not Spam" settings.

People feel more connected with people not brands. I think you will always have a lower open rate if change from a persons name to the brand name.
