How long do you spend on internet marketing per week?

My philosophy is that doing this stuff should be nicer than having a job.

There are so many advantages to this :

There's no timetable or deadlines or set workload, you can work whenever you like, for as long as you like, and take breaks when you want, plan your week however you like
No expensive snacks at lunchtime, vending machines, etc
You can work on anything in particular
There's no boss looking over your shoulder, just associates, partners, affiliates, colleagues, like minded people who respect each other
There's plenty of help and resources online, anything from a simple dictionary search to being able to ask questions on forums, download software etc
You can do it on a budget
You can amuse yourself online when you take breaks
No office politics
No time spent travelling to and from work
No money spent on travel
You work from the comfort of your own home, or in a cafe, library, park, wherever
To some extent you have some control over your income
You can work on projects that you find interesting and are good at, things that you believe in, and you can work any way you want
You get lots of pride and satisfaction when something comes together
There's a lot of prestige in being self employed

etc etc

That's why I love doing this (even though I haven't made a penny yet - donations are welcome).

But how long do you spend on this, or how long do you need to spend on this per day or per week?

The reason why I ask is because as much as I like doing this, I hate the idea of being stuck to my computer all day every day. I'm a bit of a workaholic, and right now I have all the time in the world. But ideally I'd like to keep it down to 20 hours a week. Is this possible?

I actually get enjoyment out of being online learning, building and maintaining my business. If me and the family aren't hanging out, I'm online. Probably at least 10 hours per day unless we're on vacation or something special is going on. This still gives me a few hours every night with my family. Life is good!

It takes a lot of passion to really be successful in this business. IMHO

It takes as long as you need. No longer not less.

Some weeks you might work 10 hours and others you might work 60 it just depends on what you have going.

There is no answer to your question

Totally agree, 10 hours is standard for me. But not all of it is vigorous thinking and working. A lot of it is exploring and experimenting.

All the advantages you mentioned can also become disadvantages if you let down your guard.

It's easy to take just one more break over time, to spend just one more hour watching TV, and so on. Before you know it, you could end up being an introverted hermit who has accomplished very little despite having learned so much and possessing so much potential.

Therefore, the key is to always apply what you learn. Write it down, plan it out, and execute it.

I personally keep a to-do list throughout the week because my thoughts are usually all over the place. This list doesn't always work, but it sure does help.

While speaking of old-fashioned to-do lists, don't try to incorporate too much into your day if you know there's something in there overwhelming you. Keep it light and accomplish whatever you can one day at a time. After all, there are 7 full days in one week. Patience is key.

As far as the work involved goes, as agmccall stated, there's really no straight answer that fits everyone.

Some people are perfectly happy cranking out one short article per week and calling it a day. Others are much more involved and spend that entire week composing a detailed, 2,000-word article and then building relationships left and right. Sometimes all day and night.

So ask yourself where you want to go with your business and how fast/much you want to succeed. That will ultimately determine the amount of time you need to spend on it.

I started part time back in 1999 as I still had a full time day job working 60 hours a week but would still spend all my free time behind the PC nights and all day on weekends learning the ropes so roughly 40 to 60 hours a week.

I went full time around 2001 and began putting in 16 to 18 hours a day or more...

Now that I am successful I am still working 40 to 60 hours week and sometimes more. Do I have to work those kinds of hours, no...I could easily retire but then I would never reach my ultimate goal.

Personally not much, I buy all my traffic from brokers so there is no need for me to sit in front of the computer all day...

But as far as marketing goes, my business is running 24/7

Would you be willing to share your traffic brokers by PM? Saves me testing and losing money, which is where I am at the moment.

When I first started out 7 years a go I spent every waking hour learning, testing and tweaking (16-18 days) but even today I spend at least 10hrs a day online. There is always something to do. Most time is taking up by testing new ideas as I am not one of and never have been a marketer that follows a IM trend (cough cough teesprings). Finding your own direction and techniques is where the big money is. Yes you may fail 9/10 times but this is the ultimate way to learn and find your own golden egg.

It depends a lot on what is your business and how much time you would like to profit from it.. of course you are going to spend more time if you want a bigger profit.

To be honest, i write articles and i spend around 1 hour per day writing.. the income is not enough, but for extra gain i am happy.
So it is all about your expectations.

There is a boss looking over your shoulder, called the wife. If I don't perform I get my ass kicked and I also miss the social interaction of the workplace. I love the freedom, it's true I can do what I want, when I want, but for me it's not like the dream the working man has of working online. It is hard work and I too am a workaholic.

I've found myself putting in a few hours each day however any free time I'm thinking about the internet marketing world.

It's better to set aside some time to do other things than stay online for long hours. I've been able to set a work schedule during my most productive times of the day.

In fact, I usually take 10 - 15 minute breaks so I don't fell overwhelmed. I think it's worth all the time we put into it. The lifestyle, the networking and the people you met along the way.

I know I couldn't be anywhere without the help and guidance I received in my earlier years of just starting.

Some people work 40 hours, some 10, it really depends on what level you are on and your commitment at that given time.

Normally, I would start my day by checking my email in the morning. Then spend at least 8 hours working in front of my laptop during the day. There will be days when I need to extend. It really depends on the load I have to work on. So there is no definite answer.

At night before I sleep, I still check my inbox from time to time using my mobile phone. So I guess the only time I am not working is when I am literally asleep.

Like everyone else has been saying it all depends on how your business is doing and what you want to get out of it.

If you just want to make a few extra bucks then a few hours a week would be ok... If you have much higher goals then 40 hours plus would be a good goal especially if you are just getting your online business off the ground,

Everyone's has different habits, and work ethics as individuals

For my first two years, about 25 hours per week during college term-time and about 55 hours per week at other times.

For my next two years, about 60-70 hours per week.

For my most recent two years, more like 40-50 hours per week (much of it training a small group of virtual assistants to whom I now delegate some of the work, and establishing by trial and error the bones of a "VA training method" so that I can much more easily duplicate that process in future, as and when needed).

LOL, it's hard work, building up and running a successful business (and by that stage, it was a successful one). And when you own the business, you're the first person who doesn't get paid, if anything goes wrong, and all the rest of it: it's not like being an employee, is it? (On the other hand, we have greater motivation to work hard than most employees do?).

A better question to add to this is how many hours do you spent when "Working" is on Facebook, YouTube, checking sales, checking emails etc... When I first started, I was in front of my computer ALL DAY but I was literally refreshing my Clickbank page every 10 minutes and checking my emails every 5 minutes. Funny thing is I thought I was taking MASSIVE action... failed.

I usually spend around 3 hours a day but now that I'm starting a major project, I'm probably going to spend around 7 hours a day initially. Once the project takes off and the hard work is done, I'd be doing 2 hours daily.
