Make Yourself Memorable

I was thinking tonight about how we market ourselves. I don't think a lot of people do that very well.

Much of business is about relationships and yet on the internet we usually choose to be anonymous and can never build trust.

A few years ago I was at a seminar where the facilitator asked everyone for a business card. She then randomly passed the stack around and asked everyone who they would likely call for a house or vitamins... it was ALWAYS one of the people with one of those dorky cards with their picture on it.

And it didn't matter if the person looked like Angelina Jolie or Dom DeLuise (well, it did to me but that's not the point). The photo turned the card into a person.

Here's something to try if you work an offline business:

Take your business cards and punch a hole in the corner of it. When you hand it out ask the person to hold it up to a light and look through it. Then say, "From now on, whenever I call you and say I'm the guy/gal with the hole in the card you will remember who I am."

Ten years from now people will remember that conversation and who you are.

Great idea, and will you be modeling a swimsuit and smoking a cigar as you hand them the card and tell them to look into the light?

Are you sure they won't run away? Just kidding of course!

Great idea, and a lot of this is expressing yourself and not being afraid of doing that. All too often people try to be safe and conform to the standard of what think everyone would expect.

It's good to be reminded that doing something that is different, funny, out of the ordinary, attention getting, etc. is what can help people remember you. Often when in public my wife is trying to hold me back, and she can't always believe some of the stuff I do, but how am I supposed stop having fun?

I'll be in a yellow bikini if you remember me when I need you.

It took me years to understand what Carl Galletti used to tell us at his seminars: the most important thing you can do here is to meet the people next to you (not the gurus on the stage).

So true. So often an opportunity is right there in your grasp, yet you don't even know it.
