Can you transfer a domain name from GoDaddy to Hostgator?

All of my customers so far have been happy to sign up to GoDaddy for me to transfer the domain name to them.

I have one customer now though who wants me to transfer the domain name to him at Hostgator. Can this be done?

yes you can. I'm not to familiar with hostgator but there should be an option to transfer domain names. Transferring site data in another thing. It can still be done but it requires a bit more work.

You can also leave the domain registered with godaddy and change the name servers to point to hostgator's name server's and have the domain registered with godaddy and hosted with hostgator.

The site is already transferred to Hostgator for hosting. The nameservers are all pointing to Hostgator - that bit is all done. It is only the actual registration of the domain that remains at GoDaddy.

I can't find anything in my GoDaddy account where you can transfer the domain name to another company.

    G'day Sheryl,
Yes it can be done (but I find it very UNintuitive on godaddy's end).

    See post #72 here:
    http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-advice-2.html

Just substitute namecheap with hostgator in the description.
You have to initiate the transfer request from hostgator first, then go over to godaddy, as per the directions in post #72.
Using the above directions therein, I manage to transfer all, except for 1 remaining domain, out of godaddy.

    HTH.

    Thanks Astaga

I just had a quick look through that thread and found the instructions - thank you. I wonder if you can tell me why there is a $200 penalty from GoDaddy, is that for any transfer or just because there was an issue with the affiliate spam?

quick bit of advice - NEVER host at the same place you registered it.

If you have to ask why, just wait till you have a problem with your host.

This is just MHO, but the OP in that thread had an affiliatEE of his apparently spamming and he (the affiliatOR) was put on notice by GoDaddy about the $200 fee. From the log of events posted there, he managed to transfer out of GD before being forced to "pay up"...

Like Jon said, it is advisable to keep your domain registrar and your domain hosting using separate service providers. It is the prudent thing to do.

Here's a video tutorial that might help you:

It might be a little outdated as to the graphics or design or the sites, but the info in it is good.

    Thanks guys.

I always have my domains registered separately from my hosting. I register at GoDaddy and I host at Hostgator and all my customers so far have been happy to do this too. It's just this one customer now that wants the domain to be registered with Hostgator too.

I have contacted him and advised him that she shouldn't have them registered and hosted with the same company. I've also told him there is the $19.95 fee from Hostgator to transfer the domain which he can pay if he insists on the transfer.

Thanks for your help though, I've had a look and can see where to transfer it so if he definately wants it done he can initiate the transfer himself through his Hostgator account and pay the fee.

    Thanks
    Sheryl
