Is it my imagination or has there been a massive influx of spammers?

There seems to be an awful lot of posts lately that have been trawled up from 2010/11/12/ by new members with very low post counts with the express purpose of saying absolutely nothing further of value to the original post, leading to many folks failing to notice the date of the OP and blithely replying also with nothing useful to add.

I seem to recall that bumping old threads without due cause was punishable by a fate worse than death, so should these types of posts be reported?

Current sitrep anyone?

Sure, report it when you see it.

Those rules are still in effect but if nobody reports it then it's not easy to handle it.

It depends on the context. If someone wanted to bump an old thread because they wanted to stay on topic and not start a new one, then it's okay. As long as their post is relevant and follows the rules.

One liners that say "that was great" or "thank you" that bumps an old thread, please report those by using the "report post" icon.

There are account harvesters trying to build up massive amounts of accounts here at WF since it is again free to join.... They put all kinds of crappy questions up and respond randomly with terribly confusing posts in old threads.

Once the dust settles and they have 'matured' their accounts with a few dozen posts, they go back in and edit old posts to add links or add signature files, etc.

Unfortunately it seems like it has been happening non-stop since they stopped charging for accounts... But hey... Numbers are up for the new owners!

Yes, M&M that thought did occur to me, it has no doubt always been a problem on the WF just like anywhere else, it just seems to have got worse recently, perhaps there is a new wave of software out there somewhere?

Yes, report it when you see it.

2 days ago, there was someone writing in Chinese letter with many different links in their post. I don't see that anymore so I guess someone already reported it to the moderators.

Something else that might be the cause of this issue is: someone searches for threads about a topic and without caring to check when they were last posted in, a 'quick' reply is made.

If you open the first page of the forum (and other pages), you'll see threads of a certain topic having the same person as the last poster. Closer scrutiny shows they have very diverse dates.

I think WF should lock old threads with no activity. If a thread hasn't been commented on in a few months, then don't allow further comments. It's still searchable and people can read it, just not dig it up to the front page again.

Nothing is more frustrating than commenting on a thread then realizing it was started back in 2012.

Yes, I agree. Though generally I will look at the poster's past posts (if there are any) to see if there's a trend. You can once again click on a person's name and look at their past posts.

Not going to happen. There are some really good threads that sometimes get resurrected simply because they are that good. Regarding your last sentence, hey..that falls on the person replying.

Can't argue with your last point. Lol. I do try to check when the thread was started.

The spam filters appear to be in place now as I'm seeing far less overall spam (and less have been reported).

Regarding other issues with the forum, the new owners are aware of most of them and are working on them as best as they can.

One of the best things you can do as a member here is to use the "report post" icon (red triangle thingee) to report spam, rude members, or people breaking the rules.

Ah, righto thanks Rod that's good to hear.

I'm sure the new admins are aware of the problems with various broken bits as you say, and everything possible is being done to make us all happy bunnies again.

You are just now noticing this? I have noticed it for the past 4 years... If it isn't some blatantly lazy 1 liner less than a sentence, it's some inane question that could have been answered with a google search. If it isn't one of those, it is some freak setting up for another to answer a question as to market. Most questions here in fact are inane newbie questions from people trying to be "affiliates" or make adsense sites. People are truly stuck in adolescence, it seems...

Nope, It's just that it suddenly got noticeably and considerably worse since the change of ownership, thus prompting a rare post by yt.

Maybe this is stupid, but I just don't know how posting around here really works... When I signed up, I had to pay $10 or so to create an account and post here -- does that not exist anymore?

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Yes there was a brief period when membership returned to the paid model, presumably done by ex-owner Allen to alleviate the spam problem, the obvious consequence was membership dropped and thus free membership was re-introduced shortly thereafter I believe.

I dunno, I have not noticed it getting worse since the merger. It has been this bad for a while now. Maybe it is because I spent a long time just lurking and reading, so I noticed it earlier.
