Free cellphone number for registration verification?

Many communities are often require to supply them with persona cellphone number to verify registrant is a real person by sending code to his cellphone.

Besides me being concerned about for privacy reasons about my cellphone number being supplied to different forums, I also use forums for promotional purposes and wanted to know if there is a way to get free cellphone number only for SMS receiving purposes without having to subscribe to other services.

If you are aware of such free service then I would like to be informed as well. This is only for SMS receiving purposes. I wouldn't mind knowing about free service offering SMS for sending purposes as well though.
