Domains vs Subdomains what should I use?

Hi,

I am wanting to create a series of mini websites that target different niches, but due to my budget (IM Beginner), I am wanting to know how to keep my costs to a minimum.

I want to create each mini site with YouTube Videos and articles for a particular niche/product then refer to Amazon for purchasing the product.

If I buy Domains for each niche that will run up costs quicky, what I am wondering if subdomains will work?

For example:
1. Create a domain called amazonproductreviews.com
2. Have mini niche products I want to promote that can be diverse for example
- Lawnmowers
- Kitchen Appliances
- Rubix Cube
- Calculators
- Car Parts
3. Can I create each wordpress mini site to be:
lawnmowers.amazonproductreviews.com
carparts.amazonproductreviews.com
etc.

4. Root domain will be nothing or generic. Not sure how to implement?

- Would I be able to get SEO benefits as I understand that each subdomain will be treated as unique?
- Would these rank in the Search Engines?

5. Any other considerations or comments?

Thank you for answering, and I am sure there are many other warriors out there that could find this information useful....

Sounds like you're just trying to create one large review website. That's fine.

Why are you so set on creating a whole bunch of sites right from the get-go? How about building ONE site in a small niche like Lawnmowers and focusing 100% on that one until you see some progress. If/when it makes some money, take some of it to buy another domain and start scaling it up. If later you want to make a bigger site, you can always merge them or let them sit and start on a more ambitious project.

Trying to build a huge, general review site (or dozens of smaller ones) right from the start seems like a recipe for disaster.

Thank you for the replies. I agree with your comments, but I am planning to start off small but I am concerned with creating "unrelated" products within each subdomain all under a umbrella domain (main domain name). Does this hurt/help ranking and SEO when I do this?

I don't think it helps or hurts SEO rankings necessary. What you're going to need a plan for is your growth and how you transition from the first review into a large review site.

Are you going to start with a lawnmower review, then add a kitchen appliance review? Or are you going to review a bunch of lawnmowers, then a bunch of weed eaters, then a bunch of weed killers, etc. Or understand there may be a weird period where you're visitors say "what the hecks up with this site?"

The transition is going to be slow. For user trust-ability, it could be odd to see a site with a bunch of reviews between the time you start and the time you're somewhat developed.

Personally, I like large review mega-site. But, you'll either need to create a ton of content before launching it. And/or higher reviewers to create a significant amount of reviews.
