Cool...I Was Just Schooled By Winnie The Pooh

The other day, I was reading the book Thank You Pooh to my kids and guess what? I learned a great lesson about marketing (who woulda thought?).

So Pooh has 10 empty honey pots that he wants to give away. So he goes to each of his friends and asks them if they need a honey pot. The problem...they don't need a honey pot per se - BUT each one found that they DID need something. It just so happens that the honey pot was the perfect solution.

* One needed something to hold carrots in
* One needed something to hold the books on the shelve
* One needed a stool
*One needed a vase

Lesson learned: Honey pots are not JUST for holding honey.

So it got me thinking...how does my target market look at my products? Are there other groups I could tailor my products to? Or if I'm promoting an affiliate product are there other groups I can target? Or during product development what can I do thinking about this upfront? Just because I see it as a 'honey pot' doesn't mean others see it that way.

It's amazing how you can get inspiration from practically anything if your mind is tuned in!!

    Hey Lisa

Cool post. I have also thought about this quite a bit. It would be much easier to rework an existing product for a new market segment than to create a whole new product.

Infact in some cases it would just involve changing the name of the product.

Over the years I have seen this happen on infomercials many times.

      Hey cool brainstorming

this is what we call thinking outside the box.

But as the poster above me said, it would be better to garnish the product to target different segments of people. In this it could actually be just changing a few things in the product and maybe it's name.

It's a great little secret that so many business people fail to tap in to. Well, not really a secret but more of "using your head". Sometimes entrepeneurs are so busy that they forget to think.

    A wonderful post Lisa!

  • Moral: People like free crap and will take it when offered and find a use for it? But would you use a honey pot as a carrot holder if a better alternative were available?

FOCUS and TARGET. People want cheap and free but ultimately they want to believe the purchase they are making is the "Right" choice. They want to feel good about what they buy. I read a study recently that once a person owns a product they value it more than if they do not. Why else would so many companies do try before you buy programs. In sales you want the customer to create an experience in their mind about how much better things would be if they own the product... put it in their hands, have them try the features. Want to sell more TV's? Give the customer the remote, show them how easy it is to operate... offer them incentives... free delivery, extra warranty, or whatever.

Your job online is to create the experience that makes them want to buy from you. And try as you might a single mind won't out think the collective. But your point about taking a customers point of view is well taken. It's always about the guy/gal who is going to make the purchase not you.

You think Winnie the Pooh is good - dig into some Dr. Suess sometime!

Lisa - I have long atested to the fact that you HAVE to get outside and moving to get your brain doing the same. Most of my best ideas come from the Socrates method - walking and thinking at the same time.

Besides - you NEED to think out of the box. That way the box is empty for use when you find a great lode of gemstones and agates.
