Best choices for setting up an Affiliate Program?

Aloha everyone!

I'm currently finishing up a project that I've been working on for several years (yes, years!). Essentially it's an online (and offline) application for Internet Marketers that I intend to market as a subscription service.

In order to market this effectively I will be relying on affiliates, I intend to pay a healthy recurring commission to make it worth their while and of course I'm creating a top-quality product for them to sell.

I'm now at the stage where I need to integrate a payment processor into the application. There are a few choices here, and this is where I'd like some input from fellow Warriors:

1 - Clickbank

They are probably the largest affiliate processor, which means I could recruit a larger number of affiliates. I understand that they also take care of the tax forms for US affiliates who make over 600 dollars, which would be a real time saver. But on the downside it's my understanding that affiliates will need to wait at least 60 days for their payout, and that the initial payout has some restrictions (I believe you need to sell at least 5 subscriptions, not from the same city and not with the same payment method?). Their refund policy also is of some concern. And to be honest I'm not 100% clear on how they handle recurring payments.

2 - PayDotCom

They are appealing as they pay out with PayPal immediately and their recurring subscription process is easy to understand. However I believe you need to payout the affiliates yourself (with a PayPal mass pay) and take care of the tax forms for those who need them.

3 - In-house system

Building my own system that uses PayPal is another option I have considered. This would allow affiliates to be automatically and immediately paid, it would also allow me to setup a 2-tiered affiliate program. But of course I'd have to take care of the tax forms on my own and I'd also need to recruit the affiliates myself. Another consideration is would potential affiliates be hesitant to participate in an independent affiliate program with no track record?

I'd love to get feedback from both affiliate marketers (which option would you most likely sign up with) and those who have successfully run their own affiliate programs.

Thank you so much...

Bill

P.S. I'd also be interested in hearing from fellow Warriors who might be interested in beta testing this beast once its ready later this month, please PM me if you're interested and I'll provide more details. Thanks!

I think you've got some bad info

clickbank does not have a 60 day waiting period to get paid - I get paid after 15 days.

pay dot com does not pay immediately - the soonest I've had a vendor pay me is around 30 days.

I'm using 1 Shopping Cart for an in-house affiliate program. Much better than either of the other options.

I can offer my affiliates perks like lifetime tracking and they get paid on the first of each month (no minimum payouts).

As for recruiting your own affiliates, I have far more affiliates promoting for me via my 1 SC than I ever did via CB, and PDC affiliates were dismal.

The only thing to check on. You want to do recurring? 1SC won't do recurring via PayPal, and you need to do it via a merchant account.

I hadn't seen Steven's thread, thank you for pointing it out. I will send you a PM today with more details about the application - sorry to be so "closed lipped" about it right now, in about 2 weeks you won't be able to shut me up about it!

I obviously was working with incorrect information, thank you for setting me straight Jason. Would Clickbank be your reccomendation?

Until I saw this I had not heard of Plimus. I will definitely investigate. Do they have a good base of affiliates?

Thank you for your response John. Is Fantasos now rebranded as Delavo? I will certainly look into it based upon your reccomendation.

My intention has always been to treat my affiliates like gold, I am setting up a separate site just to provide support for them.

Thank you Davion - have you used Clickbank for recurring payments?

Excellent information Kevin, thank you. I'm curious as to how you recruit your affiliates. Any information would be appreciated.

Again, thank you all for responding. This forum is a wonderful resource thanks to folks like you!

I use Clickbank and RAP to run my affiliate programs.

Clickbank has a huge affiliate base which you can tap on and the support is efficient. It's pretty much hands-off but be ready to pay the 7.5% plus $1 transaction fees for each sale which can really shave off your profits especially if you are paying a big percentage of commissions.

It is very easy to set up at Clickbank and pretty secured as well.

As for RAP, it's instant payout to affiliates make it an attractive option. Also, everything from payment processing to handling your affiliate registrations is neat and secured. Pretty much hands-free once you set it up. And they also have an inbuilt mailing system for you to get in touch with your buyers.

    Bill,

I've used CB, PDC and other third party systems
to manage affiliates. They all have their advantages
    and disadvantages.

I now use Fantasos (JVM2) because I like to be in
as much control of my business as is possible.

Many people forget that their affiliate list is just as
valuable as their lists of subscribers and customers.

However, if your "beast" is to be delivered online as
a subscription service, I'd suggest that you consider
putting the service inside a membership site that has
built in affiliate functionality. My membership script
of choice would be Robert Puddy's Launch Formula
    Marketing
    .

I'm a CB affiliate. They pay every week, cheque or DD.

Recurred billing runs fine. They just need to make 5 different credit card sales before getting paid. Stops them opening an account, buying a product through their link then cashing out.

I am also a CB affiliate and they do pay weekly now which makes it very convenient.

    Hi mickey1090

Thanks for your response. I have been looking through ClickBank's site trying to get more information regarding their recurring payment feature. Do you know if they have a developers manual (similar to the ones PayPal provides for developers)? Best I can find so far is their " Instant Notification Summary" page that has some code samples.

Also, the site mentions a test mode that you can use to test out your links. Do you know if ClickBank has the equivalent of the PayPal Sandbox for developers to test code before they implement it?

    Thanks Again

    Bill
