Advice on how to promote raffle site...

With all the new forums since my last visit, I'm not sure which is appropriate for my question anymore...so I'll try here :-)

I started a new site and I need some advice on the best ways to drive traffic...

My new site (Raffles4Watches.com) sells digital posters, a fancy term for downloadable JPG, for $10. For each poster you buy, you'll be given a free entry to win a new watch. Winners can choose from brands like Rolex, Panerai, and IWC. The posters are one-of-a-kind, and limited editions to 1,200 pieces. Once we sell 1,200 posters, a winner is chosen and we immediately begin selling a new poster with entries into a new raffle.

The winner's picture, choice of watch, and a recording of the phone call to say "YOU WON" will be posted on the site as well.

I have tried most of the basic stuff, SEO, facebook page, linkedIn, etc. My problem is that after subtracting the cost of the watch, we only make about $1.60 per poster. The CPC for adwords like "cheap Rolex" is more than we would make, even if everyone who clicked bought a ticket (which we know is really only 1-3% most of the time).

So if anyone has any insight on marketing techniques based on the financials I mentioned, I would be very grateful.

Thanks!

You have a lot more posts than I do...if you really think that super-cheap traffic has some chance of converting, I'll do it. Not sure if your post was sarcastic or not....

Maybe you should sell something else.

It seems to me that you margins are way too low for that product.

The margins are low, but at volume, the money is good. So for example, if I could get one raffle per month, I'd be grossing $24,000 each year...and I believe the site could eventually get to a point where we are holding 2 or 3 raffles per month. So the money is there, once we start generating traffic. And I don't mind losing a little money the first few months to generate the buzz...but the CPC of the search terms gets up into the $3-$5 range to be top ad.

If you look at those ridiculous bingo sites in the UK for example...they are getting millions PER DAY and your chances of winning are much worse. You could spend $100 on my site and have almost a 1 in 10 chance to win a $10k Rolex.

I think you probably need some legal advice pretty urgently. Especially if you're going to make public representations like that, in writing.

One other note...the winners are given their choice of a LOT of watches...some of them are only $5k, they go up to $10k, this is cost...the retail is much higher. So if the winner chooses the $5000 watch, we'd make a lot more money than if they chose the $10,000 watch.

What's the point of the digital posters? Are they a glorified raffle ticket?

You don't have a country listed - but be aware raffles are against gambling laws in some countries.

Yes, the posters are necessary to make this a sales promotion and not a raffle, which is illegal as Kay pointed out....

Have you checked on the legality of the "raffles"?

Based on what I know (which is very little) this is a grey area in a lot of Jurisdictions. It would only take one unhappy "buyer" to file a complaint with their state attorney general and you can find yourself the target of criminal charges.

I am not a lawyer, I just know that here in Michigan the lottery commission can get real picky on stuff, even with non-profits.

I appreciate the concern, and I know its confusing because I call it a raffle...but its really a sales promotion. We have run this by lawyers to make sure we are doing everything above board.

Is there a way to enter without making a purchase?

    LOL@ Alexa...

Again guys, my crappy math aside...we have run this by a legal team...yes, there is a way to enter without purchase. I appreciate the concern, but we have good lawyers advising us. Let's get over the legal stuff and I would love suggestions on the best way to promote this?

    Thanks!
